extremely tempted to buy this system...i want to setup a system that can handle several virtual machines, act as a web server (with SharePoint), a DB and application server, media server for streaming and decoding content on the fly, and still be able to play video games. I know i'll need to buy more RAM but i have never built a PC before so am looking for some guidance on if this is way more power than necessary or any other suggestions.

I'm builiding a new system and my last comonent is mobo and cpu.
I plan to run several VM. watch movies, regular work and 3D gaming on it.
If it were me, VM or not, I'd use a 4670K or 4770K. The 4770K at stock frequency benchmarks near this CPU in multithreaded tasks, and then there is not even a comparison in single threaded tests. Plus the Intel CPU's can go 4.5GHz+, while this AMD CPU seems to already be near its max frequency.
I don't think this CPU is priced anywhere near where it should be. Even with virtual machines or server type loads, this is not a server chip, and Haswell performs right up there with it in raw power, especially when overclocked.
Then there's the whole power consumption thing. Haswell consumes less than half the power under load, and a little more than half the power when at idle, in the 4670K and 4770K.
Is the power consumption on this processor going to break my bank if I leave my rig on 24/7
The idle power difference between this and Haswell plus power supply losses: .03kW/h*24h*365days*0.16$/kwh*1.18powerfactor=$49.61
Ball park extra idle cost per year.
Now you would need to factor your load in based on usage.
On the up side during the winter you could do protein folding for extra space heating.
On the down side you will pay three times this over to eliminate the heat via air conditioning if needed in your climate.
