Can someone recommend a tethering app for iPhone 5s?

MrCookieBar 1,776 1,706 September 29, 2013 at 01:13 PM
I have Unlimited data with Verizon, and I've been running FoxFi on my Android phone for tethering.
When I travel with my kids, it's nice to be able to open an internet connection, and let my kids have WifI internet thru my phone.

Now I'm upgrading to a iPhone 5s. I don't really know much about the Apple world.

Is there an Apple app (similar to FoxFi for Android) that will allow me to tether through my new iPhone 5s?

If you refer to your husband/wife as 'DH/DW', you're too old to be active on a forum.

If you ask for marriage advice on a(ny) forum, you should seriously reevaluate your life.

If you don't know the difference between 'their', 'there', and 'they're', I automatically assume you have a mental disability (same goes for to/two/too and your/you're/yore).

Only if it's jailbroken. Otherwise you're stuck paying extra to the provider to turn on tethering.

The option to tether or hotspot is only available if you either pay for it via your provider or jailbreak the phone to access cydia apps that allow you to use the tethering feature. Since the iPhone 5S and any other phones running iOS 7 cannot currently be jailbroken, your only option is to pay for the feature.

Assuming you have the shared tiered data. If so the built in hotspot should be included and not cost extra.

Are you saying that the tethering apps (iTether, FlashArmyKnife) don't work on a 5S?

both apps have been pulled from the app store.

i dunno if you can sideload flasharmyknife's ipa without jailbreak, but itether is now just called "Tether" and requires a $30.00 a year sub fee as its a HTML5 web app.

I don't mind paying $30/year for a tethering app that works. Verizon wants to charge ~$360/year for hotspot.

I'm looking for a tethering app that will run on a 5s. I really don't care if it's no longer on the app store.

as tether doesn't have any updates for over a year, i'd be wary of using that service.
flasharmyknife i don't believe is developed any longer either so i doubt it'll work bug free on ios7
also flasharmyknife required you to leave your phone on, the screen on for the tether to work.
If you shut the screen off, it would stop tether.

you'll just have to wait until more ios7 development comes along, or maybe re-evaluate how much data you're using and convert your phone plan to a share everything plan that includes tether for free.

Please let me know if there's a tethering app that you can recommend...

Even if the app does work, the service provider can easily see your usage increasing more than the average mobile device would use. It's really up to the carrier to decide to tack the hotspot/tether fee to your bill if you use it too much through those kinds of apps. Stick Out Tongue

I've been using FoxFi for 2+ years. Verizon's never tacked a hotspot/tether fee.

Please let me know if you have a similar iPhone app that you can recommend.
