I have found the wifi is poor on the nooks. Of course I am using a centurylink router which some old notebooks do not even see. It does like my alternate WRT54G though.

Got one. My Nexus 7 screen shattered the other day, and I don't want to drop a lot of money on a replacement. All I use it for is watching subbed anime with MX Player, so hopefully this thing won't have trouble with that. If I run into issues, will just immediately return, though the 14 day window is pretty small for that.

Just contact B&N if any problems. It will have a full year warranty thru them. Very easy to work with.

People are stupid about 1SAD. Two things you need to know:

1. Except the shipping to take awhile. 1SAD doesn't store the majority of their items in a central location, so what happens is they ship the order off to the warehouses that store the items. Depending on the circumstance, you'll have to wait at least 1-2 weeks. My keyboard that I recently ordered for $25 (which arrived, by the way, in pristine condition) took about 2.5 weeks to arrive.

2. If the product is defective, you'll probably have to play phone tag with customer service and fight for an RMA.

$70 is a fantastic deal. It's so good that I'm even tempted, even though this doesn't have all the features I want.

Oh, I meant issues with playback, like MX Player not recognizing the subtitles or being able to play the video for certain file formats (xvid, mkv, etc.). My Nexus 7 never had issues, but that sort of thing is finnicky, especially with old fansubs.

On the warranty though, you just call them up, say you bought a certified preowned product, and it's automatically covered for a year?

That's because android, unlike ios versions prior to 7, does actual multitasking. All the apps you load and ask to do background notifications and work behind the scenes. When a bunch of those kick in at the same time, you get a lag. There is also some stuff around 'trim'ming the flash periodically which can induce a few seconds of stoppage now and then if your apps tend to create and delete a lot of files. Also, if a slow SD card is installed, that can seriously contribute to the alleged 'lag' problems.

ios until v7 suspended background apps and processes, only operating with the focused app. So while you notice less lag, nothing was really being checked on in real time. Be interesting to see people's opinions on ios product lag now that they're doing some actual multitasking. It'll be a bit before the apps catch up with the abilities though.

So solution to a lot of the lag problems are to use an sd card with fast 4k random read/write speeds, which has absolutely nothing to do with the 'class ratings', turn off background notifications and background processing options or remove apps when you can use chrome to check the same services (gmail, facebook), and you'll see less problems with slow downs from excess processing.

If you're a tech nerd propeller head, there are kernels kicking around for the newer versions of cyanogenmod that do the trim function in a more elegant manner that eliminates or reduces lag from that operation. Haven't tried one myself yet, because I don't really see the problem that much. I imagine those will work their way into stable releases sooner or later. How that works is very specific to each device, so not really something that google can bake into android themselves.

Front page yesterday, but a daily deal. It'll be back.

good write up. my 1 year old n7 32gb never experiences lag. its always updating apps in the background. my original nook color had cm7 loaded, and still had a few quirks-even with a correct sandisk mad card. great tablet for its day. but its so nice not having to update the os.

I wouldn't say they are stupid, maybe uninformed. Their shipping can be slow at times, so if the items you order from them are time sensitive, look elsewhere. Thankfully I haven't had any defective products from them, so I can (and probably will) wait awhile for shipping.
And yes, I agree with you this is a great deal, and I don't want to wait around for Black Friday to possibly get one for $50 or less

Looked around a bit, looks like the trim function is incorporated into the newest 4.3 version of android. The app related lag depends on how many apps and items you have loaded, which is why some people have more of it than others. Volume of usage also makes the trim issue bigger for some users.

If someone has a tablet thats rooted, you can give this a whirl. Just make sure to read the directions.

Does B&N allow for rooting of tablets and installation of CM, or is it still illegal?

I'm interested in an HD or HD+ (mostly an HD+), but the inability to run the Amazon App store without hacking it (and breaking the law) is holding me back.

this + FreedomPop mobile wifi + Voip app = cheap phablet with free monthly service

do you think this will work???

free 500MB FreedomPop does not have 3G coverage, to get 3G you need to pay $3.99 that makes it not free unless you can live with 4G only

that said we have both the HD and HD+ but i use only the HD with FreedomPop at work incognito mode because it's small my boss won't notice, it fits perfectly in my font or back jean pocket if i have to walk around, also i find it's much more cute compared to HD+ which is fugly in my opinion compared to other 10" tablets

the HD+ also restarts a few times on its own but my HD runs like a champ with many tabs opened at the same time

the lowest for refub nook simple touch is still $37 but for regular use this is a much better buy at $70 for a very capable, fast, responsive tablet with crisp texts

Personally, I think this is a really great deal...I would have bought this if I didn't already get the refurb Kindle Fire HD for $100, refurb Nook HD+ w/ 32gb MicroSD class 4 for $120, and the refurb Kindle Fire 1st Gen for $60 from July-August.

I'm still so amazed at how far Android tablets have come and how the prices are so unbelievably low.

According to an ebay auction confirmation from 2008, I spent $269 for a new Sony PRS-505 ereader...which is almost as much as I spent on all three tablet purchases I made in July/August!
