Do yourself a favor and pair this with StartIsBack for 3 bucks.

do not use or update to windows 8.1 for now. microsoft has pulled it because it may brick some devices. [mashable.com]

I should have listened to people when they said stay away from Windows 8 but I was dumb and installed it on my desktop.

Because pressing the start/windows button and typing whatever program you want to open using the search function is so hard...

Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu + Win7 (virtual box)
or
Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu + Win7 (dual boot)
or
Android PC stick
or
Chromebook

Tons of ways to avoid Win8 and microsoft and some are completely free.

Win8 has worked out extremely well on both my Tablet and HTPC. runs far better than Win7 did on both.

Win7 is the only viable option from your list above, Android PC stick and Chromebook are both jokes. Linux with a GUI is pointless, use it as a server or nothing...

I wonder if MSFT would run a promo upgrade like win 8 for $60, something like that, I think that's the price I paid for my upgrade to 8 Pro about a year ago

and to be honest, i don't see the big deal of lacking start button or the 8.1 start button. in 8, you just click the search, and there is your app menu, what's the big deal? Now with 8, they just move the app menu from top right (search) to left corner.

Some people are just !@#$

Windows 8.1 was the most underwhelming release ever. If Microsoft really wants to do people a "favor" they should allow upgrades to 9.0 for free, because Windows 8 has been, asides from improving stability and speed a bit, a total joke.

At least many of us on SD were able to pick windows 8 pro upgrade for 15 dollars at launch with FREE media center.
I don't think there is gonna be too many thumbs up for this deal.
Wait for windows 9 at launch.

That is a good reason to upgrade.

I was annoyed at windows 8 when I first used it too. Then I actually sat down, did a few configurations and custom shortcuts/code, and found it to be leaps and bounds better than 7. Boots up in 10 secs and never crashes, programs can be run with just 2 quick clicks, everything's faster, what more can you ask for?

The start menu is fine and all, but it's really only necessary if you're set in your ways and are unable to learn new things.

With that said, this is kinda expensive, no?

Biggest gripe I have with Windows 8 right now is that I wish there was better separation from the desktop/traditional experience and the Metro/touch experience. Currently, I find it very jarring to be going through the control panel, click something and then be sent into some dumbed down fullscreen metro window when trying to change my account picture. Or the other way, if I'm looking at my programs on the metro, actually wanting to stay in the metro world, and opening one brings me back to the desktop.

Just keep it consistent and I would be a happy camper.

Everything else seems great though.

Edit: And maybe I'm just not understanding Windows 8 either. I did just start playing with it this week.

I like Windows 8. I just updated to 8.1 yesterday and setting the same background image to the Start Screen as the Desktop almost makes the Start Screen seem like an overlay on top of the Desktop (which is probably the route they should have gone).

the only thing I'm not liking about 8.1 is now when you add icons to the Start Screen that don't have a designed metro square Windows automatically picks a background color for the icon. The orange icons are making my eyes bleed.
