Official Release of Windows 8.1 Upgrade - Issues & Solutions

blackblaze 20,457 3,352 October 18, 2013 at 01:49 PM
Im going to assume after reading this article and experiencing both issues personally, there are those on the site who may be experiencing the same and wanted to know if anyone has found solutions to either issues.

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Wi...2346.shtml

1. OS doesn't load and you get a nlack screen after reboot of Win 8.1 with cursor only showing when trackpad is touched
2. OS does loads but has watermark on the desktop saying SecureBoot isn't properly configured.

Thanks Microsoft Facepalm

I've installed 8.1 Preview twice. both times on the same machine but on different hard drives and didn't experience those problems.
Has your machine stopped booting altogether now?
The official release is only a couple of days away now, so maybe you can lay it right over your Preview version and cure the problem.

I've updated the title so show this is based on installing the official release as of today, 10/18. I tried the update on a Lenovo and a Samung, and the both machines were completely up to date prior to installing 8.1. Lenovo got the watermark issue. Samsung got the black screen issue.

Check to see if Secure Boot has been disabled in the BIOS

I see that now.
I thought the release date was the 20th, but evidently I was wrong.
So cancel everything I said.

Did you get the Lenovo going yet?
Were they both actual Win 8 machines or upgrades?
I guess it's early to find any solutions on Google, when 8.1 has only been out for 7 hours.
I'll definitely make a System Image before upgrading any machines.
Are those the only two machines you tried it on and both of them screwed up?

I just tried to get 8.1 from the store on two different machines, a Dell 16 incher and a 12 inch Vivobook, and no luck.
I have a few other Win 8 computers here that I could try it out on, but maybe I'm missing something.
Isn't it just supposed to appear when you go into the store?
How did you get it?

Depends if you have 8.1 preview already - visit this link [microsoft.com]

EDIT: Why can't I find the update in the Store? [microsoft.com]

(although the upgrade for me rendered my IObit Start Menu 8 useless Mad

I did a ton of Googling and have yet to get it to work.
It might be the country that I'm in.
Neither of the machines that I've tried to get the upgrade on, are using the preview.
One of them is a new machine that I just received today, shall we say it's a virgin, but no offers for 8.1 in the store.
It's got to be a country thing.
I'm sure the download site is overwhelmed right now and it may even be days before we get a chance to get it.

Country shouldn't have anything to do with it - click the link I posted above:

Why can't I find the update in the Store?

If your PC is currently running Windows 8 (or Windows RT), and you want to update to Windows 8.1 (or Windows RT 8.1), in most cases, you'll see this free update prominently featured on the Windows Store home page. If you've opened the Store and you don't see the update, it could be for one of these reasons:
Show all:

You might need the latest updates from Windows Update

You might be running an edition of Windows 8 that doesn't support the free update from the Store

Some editions of Windows 8 don't support the free update to Windows 8.1. These include:

o Windows 8 Enterprise

oEditions of Windows 8 Pro that are installed by enterprises using KMS activation

oEditions of Windows 8 that are installed using an MSDN ISO, and activated using multiple activation keys

If you're running one of these editions, you can't install the free update to Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 from the Store.

If you installed Windows 8 using an MSDN ISO, you might be able to install Windows 8.1 using a similar ISO from MSDN.

Otherwise, you might be able to perform a clean install. For more info, see How to perform a clean installation of Windows.

you probably need to run Windows Update to get the “KB 2871839″ update to see 8.1 in the store

Yeah, I saw that page and one of the laptops is completely updated but the system was installed from a Win 8 disc and it might be a version that doesn't get the upgrade yet, but the other laptop is brand new and I'm doing all the updates now.
Of course, between our slow internet and the long time that Win 8 updates take to install, it might be tomorrow morning before I get it all done.
If it still doesn't work after that, then I'll have to conclude that it's a country thing.
You'd be surprised at how much of a difference it makes, sometimes to my advantage, and sometimes not.
One of the good ones is that I don't get a bunch of adverts in youtube clips.
I send the link through chat, and I hear them saying at the other end, "hold on, there's an advertisement".
Then there's the lousy ones, like clicking on a link to a slick deal, and I get a message saying "sorry, this is not available in your country".

PS: I found it.
I needed one update (KB 2871389), then the upgrade appeared in the store.

Office 2013 has stopped working after the upgrade.
Tried both "Quick" and full repair, no go!

With all the problems I've already read about with the update it's becoming pretty obvious that Microsoft didn't do a very good job of testing before release. Frown Perhaps they only performed testing on one Surface Pro? Wink

Thanks Boltman.
I hadn't seen your post, but what you said was spot on.
That's what did the trick.

I'll try Office out on the 8.1 Dell that I just upgraded and will give you a report shortly.

It's not as if it's a surprise, that those who get the early editions of any new Windows system, are mere guinea pigs.
If the systems were truly ready to go and flawless, there would be no such thing as updates.
