I was in the same situation when someone told me about converting .mkv to .mp4 with the free program mkv2mp4 Works for my situation with no loss in quality
I've been researching the best ways to get my mkv files from my computer to my tv. I currently have a Roku 2 and use Plex but it's worthless for my needs. The videos just don't play. I'm also looking into Android media players such as the Gbox Midnight MX2, but that unit seems very hit or miss from the reviews I've read. The Roku 3 seems like it *might* work with my Blu Ray rips, but I'm not a big fan of Plex. So now I have to decide between the Roku 3, the MX2, or the WD Live Streaming. Any advice from people here who are more experienced than me?
I'm in process now of converting all my movies/tv shows to MP4 as my roku 2 xs wont play them..my issue is for some reason transcoding isn't working on my openelec with the PMS addon as in XBMC on w7 with PMS they work great.
The BEST program to use is Handbrake Batch Encoder its free and you can load all in as a batch have it copy the metadata ,jpegs and even delete the old movie and put the new in.Saves a lot of time as I'm doing about 600 movies/shows and clips.
