Need help getting DocuCap AB481 scanner working on Windows 8

noracrub 2,306 679 October 23, 2013 at 05:21 PM
I have a brand new Dell XPS8500 running Windows 8. Also bought a new scanner with ADF - the DocuCap AB481 [docucap.com].

I installed the software that came with the scanner -- ScanWizard DI and Abby Finereader Sprint. Rebooted but ScanWizard DI software did not work:
"Can't find scanners. Use Scanner Probe to find a scanner"
... and the Abby FineReader software did not work for me either. I got the same message.

I then installed the Microtek software linked to in this thread. That didn't work either. Still couldn't find scanner.

At this stage I've gone to the DocuCap site and installed the driver from there (v3.17 DCT) and when I go to Device Mgr, I see DocuCap481 listed under Other Device but with an exclamation mark. Properties says:
Quote :
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
There are no compatible drivers for this device.
To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.
I've gone round an round trying to install the driver automatically and manually and get nowhere. I've tried calling support at DocuCap but I'm sent into voicemail.

Oh, almost forgot to say that I tried installing the scanner also on my old Dell desktop running Windows XP. Got a bit further there in that it was able to see the scanner, but when I tried to scan using the ADF it just started to make an unholy racket and the paper didn't feed in. Tried using the flatbed and it seemed to scan but I just ended up with a blank page (and yes, the printed side was face down).

I'd really appreciate any help or advice on this issue.

By chance did you click "Update Driver " in device manager in 8 and let it try to find one online?

That may indicate that the scanner is defective.
Seems to me that if you try it on 2 different machines with different operating systems and it doesn't work, that there's a darn good chance the device itself, is the problem.

Yes, I tried that. I got the following message:
Quote :
Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device
Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
DocuCap AB481
The system cannoth find the file specified.
If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit its website and check the support section for the driver software.

And you downloaded the latest windows 7 driver (correct bit-version) from the manufacturer site as well and tried that?

I got confused around which download - I definitely downloaded a Windows 7 driver (as there was no Windows 8 driver), let me check which one..
... it's called DCT ScanWizard DI v3.171.zip, but then was not sure how to deal with that. I double-clicked and it showed Disk 1 inside the zip. Within that there was a file setup.exe but also separate folders for Window 7, Vista and XP. I clicked on the exe file in the main directory. Odd thing is that last time I did this it seemed as though it was uninstalling rather than installing as there was stuff about removing shared files. I think it was looking at files for the Abby software which I had uninstalled.

Well first thing is to unzip it into a folder assuming its the correct bit level for your OS (32 or 64 bit)

I usually unzip to a folder on my root like c:\temp

Now look in the 7 folder and see if there is a setup program if not do the one in the root... if it says it needs to remove stuff I would let it..after it should install the proper files. Some devices need to be unplugged entirely first and then you install drivers and plug it in after.

Perhaps try installing drivers without the device attached.
Windows 8 will 95% of the time accept windows 7 drivers after all its basically the same kernel.

The booklet that came with the scanner warned to install driver and software before connecting the scanner, so each time I've tried to install the software I've disconnected the scanner and first uninstall the previous attempt (if any).

This time I decided to try and install the driver from the Microtek site -- they show the same scanner on their site - the Microtek ArtixScan DI 2015c [microtekusa.com]. At least it looks the same and is described the same as the DocuCap AB481, so I figured the driver on the Microtek site would work. I downloaded swdi_3182_eu.exe, which it says is the driver for Windows 7. I installed it to the default path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microtek, but wondering if it should be in C:\Program File and if the subfolder should be rename as DocuCap?

After installing the driver I rebooted and connected the scanner. I see an icon in the taskbar saying "scanner is not ready." I right-clicked that and it brought up a Microtek window "Scanner Finder" and went through the step on that but still no scanner found. In the meantime, the DocuCap is back under Other Devices with the yellow triangle. I tried browsing for driver software on my computer by directing it to search at C:\Program Files (x86)\Microtek\ScanWizard DI but still get "Windows was unable to install."

AAAAAAAAAAAgh!

At least device manager sees it... I would try SLIM DRIVERS and let it scan for a new driver...

Tried that. If found 13 out-of-date drivers but no mention of the DocuCap scanner.

What is the exact model of your scanner?
Look at the label on the scanner

What is the exact OS you are running?

The scanner label doesn't provide any more information than the name printed on the front. It says TYPE: DocuCap AB481. This is the scanner on the DCT site - http://docucap.com/docucap-ab-481/ and this is what looks like the same scanner rebranded for Microtek - http://www.microtekusa.com/us/pro...ID=1&ID=19.

OS is Windows 8, upgraded to v8.1 a few days ago.

Trying to find user reviews on this product is as difficult as winning the lottery.
I'm going to guess that this is an inferior Chinese made POS and that you'll never get any actual support from the company to make it work.

PS: Even under the ArtixScan DI 2015c name, I can't find any user reviews.

IMO, you should just return it, if you can.

Current Products
DocuCap AM481, AD481, AB481, SB562
DocuCap Driver/ScanWizard Software v3.171 <--this is what you want driver wise

-------

Now Uninstall all old drivers

Run the uninstall software in control panel then do this also afterwards...

Disconnect scanner completely and reboot computer fully twice... run ccleaner also
Then reboot and install above driver and then connect scanner

I would also return it if I could. I have had more trouble with scanners than just about anything else computer related, and you are probably better off just using a digital camera as a makeshift scanner (assuming that you don't necessarily need a scanner, just doing things like receipts to reduce the clutter a digital camera will work just fine).
