It might not be a deal, just a head-up if you are existing Cox's customer.

I received a notice on screen tell me to upgrade my old modem to a new DOCSIS 3.0 (not sure which one) but it is free, no charge. Check the link below, it will definitely ask for your zipcode.

VERY YMMV

My order was canceled and I am posting a pic of it below. - XxadminxX

Attached is another image of my order which states the reason for cancellation (NON AUTHORIZED USER) - XxadminxX

TonyD:

Folks, i'm very sorry for giving a false hope. I just received the modem and straighten out my concerns with Cox's upper level management. The word FREE is definitely free for internet and phone subscribers, if you are INTERNET and PHONE then there is no charge whatsoever, no rental or hidden fee.

If you are internet subscribe only, like me, then they will waive the upgrading fee (God and Cox knows what it meant) but they will charge you a monthly rental fee (which is $6.xx/month).

Do not hook up the modem you receive to the internet if you are subscribed to Internet only, they will start charging when you do that, just return it to Cox's store. Free to open and explore as your will but once again don't hook-up or activate it.

For your curiosity, the modem is Netgear Wireless Cable Gateway CG3000D (can find it for about $40 on Amazon). Now i know what to spend with the staples coupon.

Noted: I only have internet with cox (used to have all 3 but cutting the cord for lower the cost). But let's see i will keep update if anything change.
If Cox provided the D2 modem (ridiculous full price or on a special "get a modem for $30) and you are still under 12 month warranty, Cox will swap for free to a D3 at your request.

YMMV on
  • getting the 12-month warranty waived; the hardware still had to come from Cox
  • doing this in an non-congested / overloaded area

_____

Edit: This may be for everyone now since the boost to 25Mbps. D2 can't do that. You will likely have to be on the higher tiers.

I see a mention of a 24 month price lock too.

and this

Offer Details and Terms
Upgrade your Internet & Telephone Modem

To qualify for the free Internet & Telephone Modem, you must also have Cox Digital Telephone service. Of course, you can also purchase a Cox-approved DOCSIS 3 modem from a third party retailer.
Charges Included

Includes applicable monthly recurring service fees and applicable discounts. Prices do not include applicable taxes, fees, and surcharges. Excludes charges for subscribed services. Prorated charges may appear on your bill if you change services before the billing cycle is complete. Prorated charges are not presented here. Prices, and/or when applicable contracts, may differ from those presented here as a result of existing customer pricing, customer's specific service address, and/or contract related updates.
So who owns this modem after they send it - Cox or the customer? Do you have to return it at the end of service?

it says you have to have phone but it let me check out anyways we will see what happens thanks op Smilie
I have internet only with them and I got a call from them few weeks ago offering me the free modem. But that was just few days after I returned them the rental modem when I realized I was being charged 6.99 a month. Since I just bought my own modem and also not happy with them charging me rental, I declined their free modem. Maybe I should have just accepted it and sell in Craigslist. Haha.. But those taking the free modem please read all fine prints. And good luck!

This is for customers who have Cox phone service and thus have an eMTA. It's a free rental. Cox doesn't even rent modems for a fee...in my area at least.

This doesn't apply to Cox customers who don't have Cox phone service.
Um I have cox phone and it doesn't matter a cable modem is a modem..the digital phone uses the box on the side of your house

I have internet only with cox too. Live-chatted with CS, mentioned no phone service on my account. They told it's still free for me, modem+wifi router combo.

How did you get the combo for free? Combo option for me is $6.99/month rent. The only free for me is the Internet & Phone modem.

Anyone knows what brand and model the free modem is?

Two weeks ago my internet was pretty much out, it turned out to be a problem at my entire apt complex. My Cox guy mentioned this free modem deal, he cleared it with his supervisor and came back a few days later to install my new free modem. I think the promotion was only supposed to be for customers who originally bought their docsis 2 modem thru Cox, but my Cox guy hooked me up anyway. Maybe you can call your local Cox office and inquire. I def did not meet the requirements of this promotion but perhaps your local office's supervisor can pull some strings.

I am not a tech person but my Internet service through cox is 18 Mbps. When I had my old modem it was pulling in 30-35. Once they convinced me to upgrade to a 3.0 my speed dropped to 15-18.
My Motorola Surfboard docsis 2.0 modem topped out at about 14 Mbps, with the new Surfboard docsis 3.0 I can get up to the theoretical 23 Mbps that Cox Preferred allows for. Could be your new modem is having problems with an old router?

Thats fine and all but they wont force you into eMTA...you already likely have the cox box on the outside wall.

Sure its nicer for them, but doesn't really enhance consumer usage at all.
