Yes the phone comes pre-rooted with several things modified and added/removed. One thing that was left on there is the tethering app. So it is pretty clear that they want you to use it.

Also I discovered by freezing the messaging app I brought the phones battery life from ~6 hours (on Wi-Fi) to over 30 hours, even with the new messaging app. Sadly I won't be able to send/receive texts or calls while it is frozen but clearly it is the messaging app that is eating battery.

Really?? How do you actually freeze the messaging app?

The updated messaging app makes the battery life almost respectable.

OT. Anyone have settings or an app where the tethering works. I tried the default app settings, app / phone specific settings from the internet, as well as killing the app and using native android tethering. Nothing worked for me.

Groveip works fine for phone calls and messaging via google voice. I wonder if it kills the battery life too. Another drawback is you lose free minutes, as phone calls eat up data.

Great tip laptopfreak. Bigmi, if you go into settings and then applications look for an app called messaging. That is the app to "stop".

Actually I used https://play.google.com/store/app...ty.toolbox Rom Toolbox in order to freeze the app. Just stopping the app would allow for it to start back up. Freezing it makes it act like its uninstalled. Keep in mind that freezing it will prevent you from receiving any messages or phone calls.
