I looked around but didn't see this posted already.
I ordered one earlier today, this is 50 less than an I paid for a bare-bones Dell earlier this year of similar configuration

the promise of gifting a few laptops away just got a bit less expensive for me. Looking around the price is quite a bit higher at all the other usual vendors

•Windows 8 64-bit
•Technical details: Intel® Celeron® processor; 15.6" display; 4GB memory; 500GB hard drive
•Special features: HDMI output

Deal dead.

This one is priced to perfection - Not soo cheap that it sells out and they make hardly any money and not so expensive that customers hold back. This is a classic Slick Deal.. Not the price errors or limited units deals we have lately become accustomed to.

Minimum size of USB to create recovery drive: 16GB stick ~WIII, henryondeals

Three suggestions to fix sound:
1) "go to Speaker Properties -> Enhancements -> Disable all sound effects." ~commodorex64
2) Right click the volume icon in the right hand corner taskbar. (Playback Devices> double click Speakers "Realtek" > Advanced). Scroll down to the highest sample/bit depth (192,000). ~Borealis17
3) If you go to the 'DTS sound' application and simply hit the power button icon to turn it off, the sound will just fine. ~onetallfoo

I picked mine up from BB today and the box and laptop both have stickers that clearly state USB 3.0. I know all the specs from BB and Toshiba web site list it as 3 (2.0) USB port but the stickers say USB 3.0 and the Device Manager says it has a Intel 7 Series/C216 Chipset which based on the searching I did says C216 is a USB 3.0 chipset.

Quote from Intel website https://downloadcenter.intel.com/...ldID=21129
" Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver contains support for the following Intel(R) Chipsets/Processors: Intel(R) 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family"

I don't have a usb 3 drive to test the speeds but it seams clear that it could be USB 3.0 ports.

Overall the Toshiba Satellite C55-A5300 seems to be one of the best models we have reviewed in this price range, While it is lacking some of the latest features and the specifications are not going to wow anybody when compared to similiar priced options it stacks up very well. The ability to expand to 16 GB of memory along with the full sized screen make this model a great option.

"the_don" : You have to make sure to REMOVE the free "Webroot Secure Anywhere - 3-Device - 6 Months - Mac/Windows [Download]" which gets added to the cart. This is because if you ever decide to return the laptop. You have to return all the free bies that come with it. Since the Software is Non-Returnable, Bestbuy will charge you the cost of the software assuming you have used the license key. Those who have already placed the order - go to your 'orders placed' page and cancel the particular software individually. This will NOT affect your laptop purchase and the free skull candy and the free cloud storage.

I just CANCELLED and replaced my order - The return policy mentioned that the purchase has to be a GIFT. I hadn't selected the gift option (free) when i made the initial purchase. I beleive unless you do that you do not get an extended return since the policy below clearly mentions "gift purchases". Since the product is still available I would suggest those interested in potential returns cancell and re-order as gifts.

Have chatted with RP online, it just depends on if the item is returnable. not necessary gift

Joshownsyouall: ATTN to get Better (WAY better) sound from the headphone jack, go into sound properties/speakers (Realtek) double click, go to advanced and disable all sound effects. The difference is night and day and a must if you plan on listening to anything from the headphone/speaker jack

From Murdock: Getting the Start Menu in Windows 8/8.1

Windows 8/8.1 doesn't have the traditional start menu. Win 8.1 has a "Start" button that takes you to the tiled screen and can start to desktop, but still no "Start" menu.

To solve this, you can get a free download called Classic Shell http://www.classicshell.net. You can also get Start8 and others which cost $3-$5 if you prefer. For me Classic Shell works fine.

Problem with the audio quality using the headphone jack is caused by DTS Sound not switching properly, I think. DTS does make the terrible speakers some better, but by the default settings on this laptop makes whatever comes out of the headphone jack sound messed up. Mine works fine after I reinstalled DTS Sound from:
http://support.toshiba.com/suppor...1200005628
I also reinstalled Realtek audio driver, but I don't know if that does anything.

Protip: No, this does not have any USB 3.0 ports. There's stickers on the box, and the laptop itself, but this Model of the C55-A does not come with USB 3.0 ports. No blue plugs. No SS USB 3.0 icon. Even tested and it's all USB 2.0. No USB 3.0 mentioned in Hwinfo. The Intel Chipset in this might support 3.0, but the hardware USB 3.0 ports aren't in this thing.

Hwinfo reports the graphics chip as Intel HD 2500.. I tested with Passmark and it scored a 251, on par with an 8600GT from 2007.
Compared to 306 for Intel HD3000, 461 for the Intel HD 4000, 598 for HD 4600.... and 1630 for a Radeon 7750.
CPU scored 1798 with Passmark, on par with an E7400 2.8Ghz Core2Duo from 2008.
17W TDP, Seems to run cool and quiet.

IF YOUR MOUSE/CURSOR FREEZES.... YOU MUST HAVE PRESSED F5 BUTTON. PRESS IT AGAIN AND MOUSE/CURSOR WILL START MOVING. PEOPLE WHO ARE USED TO USING NORMAL WINDOWS SHORT KEYS (EX. ALT+F4 FOR CLOSING APPS) ...SHOULD CHANGE THE SYSTEM SETTINGS USING TOSHIBA DESKTOP ASSISTANT APP. ONCE YOU ARE IN THE SYSTEM SETTINGS CHOOSE KEYBOARD OPTION AND CHOOSE STANDARD F1-F2 MODE.

Some info I gathered and put together from reading this thread. I do not take credit for this, just reposting a summary of what others have posted.

Fresh Windows 8 Install:
Download Magic Jelly Bean to find your product key: http://www.magicaljellybean.com/d...taller.exe
Obtain correct windows 8 ISO image

Once you have extracted the contents of the ISO, create the ei.cfg document [TEXT] in the Sources folder of the operating system. Add the following lines to the system:
[EditionID]
Core
[Channel]
OEM
[VL]
0
The ei.cfg may or maynot already be present. If it is just change the channel to oem

Make Toshiba recovery software to be safe
Boot windows 8 ISO, delete all recovery partitions
Install Windows 8, activate by phone
Download Windows 8 hotfixes, reboot
CHECK windows store, download 8.1 upgrade
Grab drivers from here: http://support.toshiba.com/suppor...1200005628
________________________________________
Fresh Windows 7 Install:
Switch the Boot Mode in BIOS (F12 at boot) from UEFI to CSM (Turn off security check at boot , then go back to UEFI screen you can then change it to CSM).
Boot from the media your copy of Windows 7 is on
Install Windows 7
Install network driver. Windows 7 will find all of the drivers itself, but you have to install the network driver first so you can connect to the internet.
Here's what I found/used (Win7 64 bit):
Realtek Wireless LAN Driver:
http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/c...48100a.exe
Atheros LAN Driver:
http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/c...41200g.exe
Realtek Card Reader:
http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/c...39800f.exe
Intel Chipset SW Installation Utility:
http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/c...41000g.exe
Realtek Audio Driver:
http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/c...53300b.exe

Windows 7 Update found these others for me: Intel Management Engine Interface, Intel Display Driver, and a thing or 2 I forgot

Celeron 1037U = 1.8GHz - 2 cores, 2 threads, 2MB L2 cache (Ivy Bridge Architecture - 22nm "tick") - 17w
- 1740 CPUMarks

the replacement processor will technically be:

Celeron 2980U = 1.6GHz - 2 cores, 2 threads, 2MB L2 cache (Haswell Architecture - 22nm "tock") - 15w
- estimate ~1700 CPUMarks (not listed, although its younger brother 2955U is)
- although slower, is faster clock-for-clock than the 1037U

edit: the wiki can be for purchasing the deal, this post can be used for technical discussion (the nerdy stuff lol)
note that CPUmark is only a "general" score, and not to be used as a be-all-end-all type of comparison

Great deal. Dual core intel (on 22nm even), HDMI, webcam, DVD RW, 6 cell battery, 3 USB ports. All the basics.

Bonus: actually has the full 10 key, 45W adapter tells you its low power (normally power adapters are 65W) or this one will just die from working all out too much Wink

Missing: USB 3.

Slapping in a 120GB EVO + custom Windows 8 installation upgraded to 8.1 + use the 500GB HDD it comes with for backup (in a 2.5" enclsure + $4) = $310 super fast machine with backups.

*To the front page with you! Thanks op.

Celeron processors work most of the time, but the one thing you need it for, it comes back and bites you in the a** for not spending the extra cash on a dual core or i3. Have these newer versions improved?

... you know, this is a dual core, right?

Yep I do. But there is a difference in the processor line between a Celeron and a Dual Core in term of cache.

I've only just bought my first Celeron ever in the Dell Inspiron 3521 (BestBuy $280, at then lowest price around.)
with Name=Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 1007U @ 1.50GHz

The machine works find so long as you don't pound the snot out of it like you had an i7.
Now certain websites systematically tear down the Celeron in the Dell (I'm looking at you Amazon.com)

Other uses it's been fine - been converting my DVD library to digital format and nary a hiccup and it works great for HTPC. For as low a price this is if I hadn't bought the Dell earlier I'd certainly had bought this for myself, one I bought is gifted off.

I was amazed to see this hadn't bee posted, after three different searches with no hits decided it was time for my first thread start

Thanks for the information. I guess for most people it will work out. But I would rather pay a few dollars more for an i3 instead. Hopefully something will come out in the $300 price range. I friend of mine was looking for one. I am lucky that our company gives us the option to buy our 3 year old laptop when it's warranty is up, so I get a new (used) laptop every 3 years.
