Is this just a hobbled ZTE N800 via installed firmware or is it actually a stripped down version that will only function on Virgin?

I wouldn't mind one of these as a back up phone, if it can be used on other networks per the original ZTE N800...Smilie

8Pm at most stores.

I was hoping to not have to go to the store seeing Target is the place to be this year ($229 50inch tv) aka lines but the website only says store only ;(

Got 2 from Target. Reached there at exactly 8. Let all people in long line enter the store first, and then I entered. Straight to prepaid section. Everyone was buying ipad, paid and out in 15 mins.

Now who is the brave sole to try and report if this can be used in GF plan?

After checking out some success stories from Howard Forum, I went out and bought the last one left at my local Target, came back and activated the phone with my grandfathered $25 plan. Yep, swapped my phone flawlessly and now my new Awe phone is activated with $25 plan intact.

one plausible theory from that Howard Forum is that Virgin Mobile quietly let grandfathered users to keep the plan as long as new phone is 3G phone, including this ZTE Awe and galaxy ring and other 3g phones. For example, a dude who got new LG F3 LTE got a warning of getting bump up to $35 plan when he attempted swap the phone, because that's LTE phone.

BIG WARNING though, as Virgin may unilaterally change the plan to $35 or whatever at their will, because the official policy is that no grandfathered plan for phones that came out after Optimus Elite.

We picked up 3 (1 for me, 1 for my GF and 1 for her sister) at our local Target which has huge lines for that 50" TV that we also wanted but couldn't contemplate getting in that line!

Nobody at all was looking at the Virgin phones at all in our store...

So, I've set one up with Magic Jack and installed a few apps - I now have a handy wifi phone in the house that will be taken on trips for VOIP duties if and when my Pantech Burst runs out of charge when travelling Smilie

There's already an update pending for the phone (75MB or so) but I've not installed this yet.."if it ain't broke don't fix it", comes to my mind.

The phone feels pretty cheap without the battery installed but once it's inserted it feels much better with a bit of weight.

I'd say it's an $80 phone all day long from my first impressions, seems fairly snappy and no real complaints other than constant nagging that a network was not available during the initial setup.

I turned off mobile data and rebooted and it seems to have calmed down.

Any other tips or observations from other users?

and anyone in New York/Brooklyn area know any target stores that still have some decent # of inventories left? I went Atlantic Terminal Target in Brooklyn and I was surprised to find only one left. sure, better than nothing, but was kinda disappointed, as needed couple extras.

Thanks for posting. This is good news. Some details...
1. Did you do online swap?
2. If it has to bump up the plan for some reason, if the system going to warn me before I confirm...can I at that point back out?

Thanks,

1. yep I did/
2. I heard that a window pops up and warn you about bumping up the plan, and you can back out from that window. never personally experienced it, but I am sure you will have choice after the warning.

this is the link that I mentioned previously. a few people had success swapping the phone to ZTE Awe, Galaxy Ring and other 3g phones.

How does Magic Jack work with this phone??

I use Magic Jack on my home PC and it is great but never realized it could be used on a smartphone.
