- 11.6" matte screen 1366x768
- Intel celeron processor with haswell architecture
- 8.5 hours of battery life
- 16gb solid state drive
- HD webcam
- Bluetooth 4.0
- USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports
- SD card slot
- HDMI port
- 2.8 lbs
- 100gb of google drive for 2 years
- 12 Gogo inflight passes

I had planned on getting the $249 c720 on either Amazon [amazon.com] or Best Buy [bestbuy.com] but it has been sold out forever now at both places. Then today saw that Google and Acer brought out this unannounced $199 version and it is available for both online order and store pickup at Best Buy! For only $199 I snatched it up in a heartbeat and wanted to spread the info to fellow SD'ers Smilie

The only difference between this and the $249 version is that this one has 2gb of RAM instead of 4gb, but since I don't have 25 tabs open at a time I went with the $50 in savings.

Of course, you will see the chromebook haters come on here and threadcrap like crazy, but for college students, people who mainly surf online, or those who don't need x86 programs like photoshop then a $199 chromebook can be a good cheap option to go with.

And before anyone asks, YES... you can use applications such as google docs, gmail, kindle reader, and many others even if you don't have an internet connection at the time.

Based on the popularity of the $249 version being sold out at both Amazon and Best buy I'd snap this one up quick while it's available!

Best Buy [bestbuy.com] = $199 and it's ready to be shipped or picked up in store today. Also, if you have an Amex card with the $25 off $250 BB offer tied to it, filling your cart with another $51+ would get you $25 off.

Amazon [amazon.com] also has it for $199, though listed as a pre-order.

Here's a chromebook forum if you have questions : https://groups.google.com/forum/#...chromebook

Here's a website that details how to install ChrUbuntu (linux) on this chromebook : http://chromeos-cr48.blogspot.com/

Not a review but good information by Anandtech here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/741...aswell-cpu

Here are all the free goodies you get when you buy this chromebook: https://www.google.com/intl/en/ch...odies.html
The 12 free gogo in-air passes nearly pay for the laptop itself considering they're usually $15/day pass.

brave to post this, but i love my chromebook (samsung xe303)...

i dont really feel it needs a hardware upgrade in my mind but a nice option for those who dont mind a fan and the extra thickness of this acer....

if you travel a chromebook is a no brainer!!

Ah, this Acer C720 Intel chip is twice as fast as the Exynos chip in the Samsung and HP chromebook 11. It's not even close. It's a huge leap in performance. And it gets better battery life on top of that. However, $199 is regular retail price. So not sure this qualifies as a slick deal.

fair, again i think its a good deal, and i would considering buying one (not crazy about the fan and thickness), but as i mentioned for my usage of the chromebook (browser + ssh terminal), the extra power means nothing, really. i dont often hit any lmitations with my chromebook where i say 'jeeez i wish this had a haswell'

id say the battery life is pretty close all things considered.

If all you do is ssh and web browsing, then maybe performance and battery life don't differ much. But if you start playing videos, using a lot of wifi, then I think it's gonna be a huge difference. I think the Samsung is not gonna even be able to play 1080p video smoothly. So overall, it's hard to recommend the Samsung or HP Chromebook 11 over an Intel Haswell one. Sorry, just my 2 cents.

I agree on the no-brainer part! nod

$199 is a steal for the lastest generation chromebook with 8.5 hours of battery life and a processor that is twice as fast as the previous generation.

As for the "thickness", the c720 is only 0.05 inches thicker (0.7 vs 0.75 inches) than the Samsung chromebook, which is barely noticable.

I've also been playing with it all day while having it on my bed and haven't heard the fan make any noise whatsoever.

wow... havent seen one in person but im surprised its only .05 inches thicker... quick confirmation with my calipers says you are correct about the thickness of the samsung, though. photo of the c720 looks deceiving i guess!

nice to know about the fan, but still would prefer fanless!

C720 is the newest to replace C710, it should come with 4gb RAM, why it is only 2gb on best buy site? Different model? wrong info?

Hmm, pretty good price, but I'll wait for ASUS one next year.
