Hmm, this is a bit scathing, though, it is from 2010.

And yikes, more critical first-hand accounts:

Basically it sounds like they throttle after a secret amount.

Is the content from usenet the same as torrents?

It's my understanding that the only thing that's different is the method that the data is delivered.

Am I totally wrong and usenet actually has better and more reliable content?

thundernews is number 1 highwinds seller that throttles or cancels accounts who download more than they think is right on black friday or sale planns. if you google thundernews throttling you can confirm this. dont be blinded by low price.

http://thecubenet.com/ has 1 year unlimited, 50 connections, for $71.88, which works out to <$6/month.

I can definitely vouch for them -- I used to have maximumusenet which, like thundernews, throttles your speed after ~200G/month, all the while insisting that they're NOT throttling you. I'm on one of thecubenet's promo plans, and routinely max out my connection at about 3.5-4 MegaBytes/sec, with large total monthly transfers, and no hint of throttling

I had a thundernews plan for $7.50/month Unlimited and never got throttled or cancelled. Just signed up for the $5/month plan Unlimited - will see if I get throttled. I'm not sure what they consider too much though as I don't download tons (way less than 1TB per month, on average less than 500GB per month but more than 250GB per month).

I have a 25Mbit connection and I can saturate it downloading via thundernews too (~3Mbytes/sec sustained).

make sure you check the backend provider. Many providers simply resell Highwinds, which tends to suck compared to other providers as far as having what you needed before it's nuked.

reddit: /r/usenet

thecubenet: highwinds
thundernews: highwinds
newsdemon: highwinds

frugal and blocknews are the same as each other.
giganews and supernews are the same as each other.
