Using Google Voice with Ooma and number porting?

jbloggs 9,661 4,515 December 2, 2013 at 09:04 AM
I'm about to signup with Ooma and was wondering the best way to tackle number porting. Ooma charges $40 for number porting and I was thinking if there is a way to avoid this by porting my number to Google Voice instead and forwarding from GV to Ooma. But the issue I see is if make out-going call people will see the Ooma number and not my main number from google voice.

In advice/opinions on how best to handle this?

Know that Google Voice is changing their API next year and it will block these 3rd party apps from using the service naively. So I would forward, not sure how to handle the outbound.

The reason I went with Ooma at this point is because OBi will no longer work with Google Voice after May 2014. I think the $4 tax will be worth it, but just trying to avoid porting numbers and just have my main number at one place like Google Voice. But the out going calls is the issue as it won't show my GV number but instead the Ooma assigned number to the people I call.
