I saw the following while searching for specs on the new Dell Inspiron 11 3000 (3137):
http://www.officemax.com/technolo...rod5400026
  • Intel Celeron 2955U, Dual-Core, 1.4GHz, Haswell (5.6 CPU score in the Windows Experience Index)
  • 2GB DDR3L-1600, not soldered on, can be upgraded to 8GB (Dell officially lists 4GB as the limit, but people have confirmed that 8GB does work)
  • 500GB HDD, 7mm
  • 11.6" 1366x768 Touchscreen
  • 2x USB3, 1xUSB2, HDMI, card reader
  • Single-band 802.11n WiFi with Bluetooth 4.0
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • 8-hour listed battery life
  • Windows 8 64-bit

$280 at OfficeMax.com right now, with free shipping. As a point of reference, Dell.com was selling this laptop for $300 on Black Friday.

Versus Asus X200CA-HCL1104G (Best Buy version):
  • Dell has twice the battery life.
  • Asus has twice the RAM (Best Buy version only; other versions are 2GB), but it is soldered and non-upgradeable. Dell's RAM can up upgraded up to 8GB.
  • CPU performance is roughly the same.
  • Asus has a smaller HDD. In either case, I personally would recommend a SSD upgrade.
  • Asus has worse WiFi, and it cannot be easily upgraded (due to the Asus lacking a second antenna).

Versus Lenovo S210:
  • Dell has twice the battery life.
  • Lenovo has twice the RAM, and it, like the Dell, can be upgraded.
  • Lenovo has a faster CPU. About 25% or so faster.
  • HDD is the same.
  • Lenovo has comparable WiFi (with no Bluetooth), and it cannot be upgraded because of Lenovo's BIOS lockdown that explicitly forbids it.

The main benefits of this laptop (vs. something like the recent Asus or Lenovo deals) is that you get an 8-hour battery life and that the RAM can be upgraded. The WiFi can also be easily upgraded (Lenovo systems have a PCIe whitelist that prevents it, and the Asus comes with only a single antenna) to something like an Intel 7260 for 802.11ac. (I have a high-end dual-band WiFi network, so being able to easily do an aftermarket upgrade of the WiFi to something like an Intel 7260 dual-band 802.11ac is important to me, though it's probably not a big selling point to most people.)

Dell provides a nice service manual [dell.com] with step-by-step photographed instructions on how to open the system and change out the RAM, HDD, and WiFi.

But it's Haswell. Based on the WEI benchmark, its performance should be comparable to that of the C2D T8100 that I have in my old laptop. It's the trade-off for the battery life (it's hard to find something with this kind of battery life at this price).

Sorry. I mentioned it mostly because I got the Asus X200CA deal recently and am having some cold feet right now, so I was looking for alternatives, which is how I found this.

You can put any label on it, including Haswell, it's still a Celeron, gimped.

Hmmm. 8 hour battery...or the equivalent of time it takes this processor to handle a single webpage.

Always appreciate effort, but this seems weak compared to others at this price.

If you want high performance in a system this small and light, you can kiss battery life goodbye.

If you want high performance and battery life, you need a larger system that can support a larger battery.

If you want something portable with good battery life, you're going to be looking at CPUs in this performance range. Which, again, it's that bad. It can't beat a Core i3/5/7, but it can hold its own against something like a Core 2 Duo.

(And if you are trying to do something CPU-intensive like compiling a browser, then I gotta wonder why the heck you're looking at a 11.6" system.)

I would expect celeron's to be cheaper than this. Almost a year ago now i bought one of the asus touchscreen laptops that was like this one( all those 11.6 touchscreen portable things) for $350 and it had a 3rd gen i3, i would hope those would drop around to this price isntead of the celerons..

And yeah its haswell celeron, but benchmarks don't lie. This is the c2d benchmark from my 4 year old HP laptop

and this is the celeron

@1587.

IMO if something is barely better than my four year old HP, it's not good enough ..

This will be fast and perfect enough to run multiple browsers, Netflix, Amazon, Microsoft Office, everything It's aimed for. Upgrade the ram and you're golden.

You all act like to you want everything to run Crysis on high settings for $10.

I guess all those Baytrail/ atom haswell are crap too. Yet everyone bought a Dell Venue 8 Pro with 32gb of memory.

Here's a CNET brief look at this laptop. Screen looks very glary and quite dim. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyGBjKfILWc

My perception from the CNET video seems consistent with some of the reviews on Amazon about the screen.http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspir...ewpoints=1

That 8 hour battery estimate is based on setting the screen at 40%, which seems impossible with the low luminosity.

Finally, here's a long unboxing on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSAMw6Va2DQ. He talks at the end about the sluggishness/lag and also the loud HDD. Other reviewers have said the same things. He says you definitely have to upgrade RAM and possibly HDD. Top reviewer on Amazon came to that conclusion as well.

So be prepared to probably invest more than the price if you want something more satisfying.

2gb ram just does not seem enough.
