We've done some great trips to Mexico and Puerto Vallarta is one place we've gone back to. If you're still there, go to Pipi's and have a Margarita for me. Actually, have 2.
I think I have noticed Pipi's around close by us. Being true slickdealers, we have stuck mostly to the $1 margarita and beer places here. For us the cheap drinks right on the beach or malecon are one of the best perks here. Being here for 4 months, the drink bill would add up fast if priced like back in the US. We start drinking at 11 am here just because its such a great way to pass time sitting on the beach and people watching for the price of a buck beer. Hard to find that in the Caribbean. Last time I was in Grand Cayman, the price of a beer there was $5.
PV is kept quite clean in the tourists areas.
Pipi's used to have margaritas the size of footbaths and if you could drink 2, the 3rd was free. ;-) Last time I was there, though, they were not as affordable -- but just as tasty. They also make a mean guacamole tableside.
Well, if you're not going to Pipi's, then take a stroll on the malecon for me and have a few $1 drinks.
I absolutely hate going to those time share "presentations" for whatever they have to offer, be it a free weekend stay or tickets to wherever. Unless as you said I was going to be somewhere several weeks it's not wroth a day of my vacation time to sit through one of those for usually a few free tickets to a theme park or something to that effect. I If I actually qualified for ~$600 that may be worth it as in some cases that would pay half my vacation off... however I would never qualify and I absolutely hate those.
For those travelling Sders who can take some hard core sales.....
Yesterday we did a timeshare presentation at the Mayan Palace in Puerto Vallarta for an 8000 peso payout. That's over $600. Yes, it gets a bit hairy at the end of the presentation, trying to exit, but not bad pay for 5 hours. We have done dozens of these over the years, and the Mayan Palace consistently pays the best $$ and is the hardest, longest presentation. Bring your Gold or Platinum credit card to qualify, as well as being a married couple. Staying at a resort and/or being a timeshare owner helps qualify you for the biggest payout. No we don't own one and would never.
These presentations really eat up a day if you are on short vacation. But if here for weeks/months, a profitable way to pass the time and pay for the vacation.
My wife and I also enjoy getting paid to have breakfast and a tour of a nice property. We have done all that Cabo has to offer each year for the last couple years. I'm up at 6am anyway so might as well have something to do before going to the pool at noon. I have heard that the pay outs are good in Puerto Vallarta and am looking for a heads up on what's available before planning the trip. I'll also be happy to share about presentations in Cabo if you're interested.
So what's the secret to getting out hassle-free (or at least, with less hassle)?
tell them your dream vacation is backpacking and camping through a country. 5$-10$ per campsite per night/per hostel. 2 week vacation = 140$ per trip. two trips per year. 280$/year. they cant beat that in terms of lodging cost. none of their calculations will work out. at $280/year they would have to sell you some "you can visit once every 5 years+ for 3 days.." Thats not my idea of a vacation every 5 years.
if they say stuff like... Wouldnt it be great to invite your family? wouldnt you want to stay in a nice hotel? Wont you get tired of traveling via backpacking? etc. Just tell them, thats not my idea of a vacation. Lets just say you spend 100$/night on lodging... but i dont, i camp and pay 5$. i loathe being locked in a room. i like the outdoors and in the open.
when asked about how much you paid for your current lodging, say "i dont know, won this as a work prize, raffle, gift from parents, i used my CC points, i used priceline and got the room for $25/day etc.)
Make sure your wife/husband is on board as well and shares the same "dream vacation"
wife and i did this in hawaii
scored 2x (1 hr)helicopter tours of kauai
2x rafting/cave tubing excursions
2x kayak river/waterfall excursion
all for 100$ and a few hours the morning we checked out (2 hrs?)
I am a fan of these presentations as well....Did the last one a couple of years back and was in and out in less than 30 mins - Got a helicopter tour of Maui for 3, Dinner with Luau for 3 and a voucher for massage at the hotel property for our time.
Just went in there and was very frank with the salesman that I will be there for as long as he wants but am not going to buy anything (no matter how good a deal he thinks he is going to give me) and he is welcome to waste both his and our time or move on to someone who will actually buy something. He just asked me to sign the paper work that I attended and let me go
Mexico is a beautiful country and you are ignorant.
I have my own tactics which is to explain how we vacation for long periods (3-4 months) and in cheap places such as Thailand, and get by paying $10-15 per night for rooms. Hard for them to match that. Unfortunately there is much more that goes into knowing how to get out with less pain, but much of it just has to be learned from experience. Sometimes we have to get rude with them to get out quicker. Sometimes we can be nice and that works. Depends on what kind of sales pressure they are using. They often will pretend to be insulted by our behavior as if they don't have people getting mad at them everyday doing these presentations.
Practice makes perfect, and with the thick skin that many SDers have, this would be a perfect gig for many, and a huge MM. Vacations can easily be paid by doing these. Cabo and Puerto Vallarta are the 2 best payers from what I hear.
Btw, most don't take 5 hours. Our avg time is less than 3 hours.
Just for the people who have done them in Hawaii, Mexico and Hawaii are like comparing apples to oranges. Mexico has much different laws regulating time share sales than the US does. Such as how long they can keep you......
