Altering brightness issue on windows 8 lenovo u430

I have a Lenovo u430 running windows 8.1, and all of a sudden the brightness adjustment buttons are not working. I had no issues with windows 8, and no issues after being on 8.1 for several weeks.

When i use the physical brightness up/down keys, the brightness indicator on the top left pops up but is stuck at one notch from the max. Pressing up and down on the keyboard doesn't change the brightness, just keeps the indiciator there. I tried physically changing it with the mouse, by moving it down on the indicator. It moves down, but doesn't change the brightness of the laptop and the next time i bring the indicator up it's stuck at the same one below max notch. I haven't tried any updates because i'm not sure what category this would fall under. Other than shutting down/restarting i haven't tried any other resolutions.

Anyone have any idea on how to fix this?

The only thing I can think of his reinstalling the chipset and the power management drivers from Lenovo [lenovo.com].
After entering your model number and you get to the download page, you'll need to select 8.1 for the correct chipset, and then change it to 8, for the power management download.
It'll be a miracle if it works, but you have nothing to lose.

I actually just figured out a fix, someone else previously had problems adjusting brightness on a different laptop and installing older integrated graphics drivers ended up fixing it. Thanks for the response though!

Try disabling the Adaptive Brightness. See here for the steps:

That's not a bad idea.
Considering that the problem didn't exist even after the 8.1 upgrade and then all of a sudden started acting up, there's no rhyme or reason to the problem, so anything that is related to power management, brightness, display settings, etc, is worth trying.

To the OP: You mentioned that it worked ok for awhile after the 8.1 upgrade, correct?
How long has it been the way it is now?
Perhaps it could be fixed with a system restore.

A friend recently brought in a brand new Lenovo laptop with the same problem. It worked fine and then the screen went dark(er) and the brightness adjustment stopped working. Disabling that evil's adaptive brightness "feature" worked. Big Grin

But then it's not the feature itself that caused the problem. So, it is quite possible that a graphics driver update is at fault.
