That's true. The most legitimate of those complaints would be the backlit keyboard, but I haven't seen one of those on anything new under $500 before Amex/rewards. This slickdeal is very good at $299 and possible rewards/AMEX savings on top of that.
I've been camping for just this type of deal for awhile... but i've been seeing some i5 lappies lately. What's the price range for those? I think I saw a nice one for around $400 the other day?

Basically I just want i5 with HDMI output. Nothing else really matters. Trying to debate whether to jump this or wait out an i5. Scratchhead

Well there's that Acer on Newegg. The cheapest I've seen an i5 without going through the outlet system is that Gateway from MS Store at $329. But it gone pretty quickly and have been OOS for awhile now. Most i5, especially Haswell rarely drop below $400.

If you want an i5, then these are the only two slickdeals that I would call very good:

http://slickdeals.net/f/6568044-acer-aspire-haswell-i5-laptop-386-99?v=1

http://slickdeals.net/f/6560062-laptop-hp-envy-15-6-i5-3-2-ghz-8gb-ram-750gb-hd-4-8lbs-beats-449-w-shopdiscover?v=1

The top one is cheaper but it's a slow ULV processor and pretty skimpy on the hard drive and memory and battery, plus it's heavier.
The bottom one is faster, has more memory, bigger hard drive, a longer life battery, and it's only 4.8 pounds.

So weigh the two, and decide if you think the Envy is worth the extra money. Only you can decide.

Thanks and repped OP, pick up one with my unused $25 off $250 AMEX Promo to cover the tax. This is the best deal right now without the need to play the outlet lotto system. Also considering that gateway from MS Store is not coming back anytime soon, this is perfect timing.
Could you tell me what the AMEX promo is please?

If you have an amex card (true amex not fia, bank of america, etc.), sign into your account and look under offers. If you have the card for awhile, you should see one that offers $25 off $250 for Best Buy purchases. Also go here for more info (for ways to register using either Twitter or FB)

Well, that depends on how you feel about spending $100 to $200 more money for one of the following slickdeals - both are good. One is a beefier & lighter, but for more dough.

http://slickdeals.net/f/6568044-acer-aspire-haswell-i5-laptop-386-99?v=1

2 Issues : Anything more than $400 is pretty much out of the question for me. I just can't spend that much for something that is truly a luxury item. I am rocking a pretty serious gaming desktop already so that's where most of my computer work is done at home.

This laptop would really just be for occasional travel... On that note battery life is also important. I might jump on this i3 over the i5 Haswell due to the 4 cell battery.

No graphic card. So you can expect a great battery backup from third gen i3.

Oh, that first i5 deal with the proposed checkout method comes out under $400 before tax.

But an i3 sounds like it would do you ok. And I think the 6 cell Ivy M vs. 4 cell Haswell U is probably a wash, and I prefer more cells considering you still have a display to power. Haswell would run cooler though if that's a concern.

Other than the two deals I linked to, I don't even know of any other 15.6" "new" i5's under $500. If I wanted one myself, I think I would just pull the trigger and stop waiting for those elusive deals.

this is NOT a good deal. This is landfill fodder.. i3, no touch screen, poor battery life, and it's cheap HP build.

I would suggest buying a used or refurb laptop for $200 or less if you don't care about even the most basic tech updates for 2014.
first off, who really cares about touchscreen with laptop, surely not me or most people! HP is not bad, i bought a 17" G series for my kid , and running strong for 3 yrs now, and he's 13 yrs. old and beat the crap out of it!
oh, by the way, it has a 1st gen. i3 cpu too!
solid laptop, and i pd. $400 for it a few yrs. ago

If you dont think this is good deal, you should show me some of YOUR good deals!! I would love to see them!

If you're looking for a new non-refurb 15.6" laptop for $500 or less, I think the current slickdeals boil down to those 2 laptops and the Black Licorice in this thread.

To decide between them:
Overall lowest price with good i3 performance, 4 GB ram, 750 GB HD, then this HP Black Licorice
Next lowest price with mediocre i5 performance, 4 GB ram, 500 GB HD, then the Acer Aspire
A step up in price, yet still in the $400's, fast i5 performance, 8 GB ram, 750 GB HD, then the HP Envy.

Something for everyone, and only you can decide. Wink

P.S. If I've missed any current i3 or i5 slickdeals for new 15.6 laptops that are better, feel free to start a new deal or give us a direct link to the deal, not some B.S. story. I've still got two friends chewing on their options as well.

TU and repped for Rexman for his research and reply to my PM. I might have to bite on that Black Licorice HP. This would be for a soon-to-be 10yr old girl, non-gamer, except for that darn Roblox game!

Be careful with ShopDiscover's exclusions:

•Offer not valid on laptops, desktops, hard drives, Geek Squad services, online photo center sales, digital downloads, long distance, TV & internet service provider sales or mobile plans

I would go with TCB for 3% and use Amex for $25 off $250 if you still have it.
I found my AMEX offer when I logged into my account since ShopDiscover won't work:

OFFER DETAILS
Get a one-time $25 statement credit by using your enrolled Card to spend a total of $250 or more at Best Buy
by 12/31/13.
PRINT THIS OFFER
TERMS
Valid in-store, at BestBuy.com or Best Buy Mobile. Not valid at Best Buy Express, on Geek Squad services made outside Best Buy stores, or at standalone Pacific Sales stores. E-gift card purchases excluded. If you order an item during the offer period but it is not shipped until after 12/31/13, it may not count towards determining whether your purchase qualifies for the offer. Enrollment for the offer is limited. Limit 1 statement credit per American Express Card across all American Express offer channels. Statement credit will appear on your billing statement within 8 weeks after American Express receives information from the merchant about your qualifying purchase. Note that American Express may not receive information about your qualifying purchase from the merchant until all of the items from your qualifying purchase have been provided or shipped by the merchant. Statement credit may be reversed if qualifying purchase is returned/cancelled. If American Express does not receive information that identifies your transaction as qualifying for the offer, you will not receive the statement credit. For example, your transaction will not qualify if it is not made directly with the merchant. In addition, in most cases, you will not receive the statement credit if your transaction is made with an electronic wallet or through a third party or if the merchant uses a mobile or wireless card reader to process it.

BTW - I used the AMEX offer on the $25 off $75 Amazon and the credit showed up the day after the purchase charges hit my account.
