Compared to the pre-Thanksgiving deal with the same i3-3120M processor, it doesn't look so good, but I haven't seen anything better priced since Black Friday. This is faster than some of the low speed Haswells that are getting paired with 4 cell batteries running $350 after mail in rebates.

What was the pre-Thanksgiving deal?

been looking for a while, this is currently the best price around for a basic laptop with a large hard drive and no rebates required. lack of USB 3.0 won't matter for most people

this is NOT a good deal. This is landfill fodder.. i3, no touch screen, poor battery life, and it's cheap HP build.

I would suggest buying a used or refurb laptop for $200 or less if you don't care about even the most basic tech updates for 2014.

It didn't even last a day and some orders got canceled. But also keep in mind, THIS slickdeal has a 750 GB hard drive and is an HP rather than a Toshiba, so that adds some value also. Otherwise, the two laptops are pretty much the same.

Let's be fair and address these threadcrapping remarks seriously:

1) no touch screen - who really needs a touchscreen on a laptop. Take 10 minutes to learn Windows 8 keystroke shortcuts, and you will be able to get around faster, plus you won't end up with fingerprints all over your screen. I think "touchscreen" has become a big buzzword due to the usefulness on smartphones, tablets, and other devices, but I many people do not care to have one on a laptop. And at $299, I haven't seen non-refurb new 15.6" Windows 8 laptop with a touchscreen, so that hardly makes this a bad deal.

2) poor battery life - not really. Adjust the brightness to a comfortable range and setup power saving so the processor throttles down when it has a lighter workload, and remember this has a 6 cell battery vs. the 4 cells in various other deals. For web browsing, you should be able to get 6 hours or more out of this. For gaming, not so much. But it's pretty much standard.

3) Cheap HP build - ALL brands have cheaper builds of laptops, and I would still take HP over all of them due to its reputation, backing their warranties, compatibility, support, updates, fair extended warranty offerings, etc.

4) This is a new laptop, not a refurb or used one. At least you know what you're getting with this one and won't get some refurb with bad pixels, some abuse, or whatever. Try to find a better deal on a 3rd or 4th generation i3 15.6" Windows 8 laptop. And provide a link instead of just thread crapping and trollng.

Agreed. In fact, since it has a larger hard drive, it's darn close to the pre-Thanksgiving deal I linked to earlier that didn't even last a day because it sold out so quickly.

So big thumbs up and reps to the OP.

You're correct. I didn't feel like doing the rebates so I skipped the black friday deals.

Thanks for posting...good laptop for my parents.
