Get the E12 amp and be done with it, cans like these respond well to a certain amount of power, more power the better to bring out the bass/treble/mids and details. Obviously you could run these on less power, but would not be getting anyway near the benefits from cans like these.

what benefit does plugging the 990s into a DAC have over plugging them into a mid-tier home audio receiver like the yamaha rx v473 [amazon.com]?

Quote from Hizaki View Post :
I really like them. Listening to the same songs with each set of headsets (i.e. Johnny Cash - Hurt), I've noticed just a less bottled up sound that I never noticed before with only listening to the ATH-M50. Directionality of sound definitely seems better too...I can more distinctly hear some instruments in the left and right, etc. Still plenty of bass compared to the ATH-M50.

I've had limited time with them...hopefully this weekend I'll have a little more time.

Fiio E7 seems to drives them adequately for CD's or FLAC files...between 10-30 out of 60 max volume setting seems to work fine.
please hsare more of your thoughts compared to ath m50, is it worht buying these if you already have m50s?

"smaller software library to choose from"

You are such a bullsh*t artist. iOS most certainly DOESN'T have a smaller software library. They have way more games and apps than any other mobile device. If you don't believe me, find android versions of games like Oceanhorn, Hearthstone, Star Wars knights of old Republic, Deus Ex the fall, the list goes on and on and on.
