Are all manufacturers fill ratings standardized or uniform? Or is it like tires tread wear ratings where it's just kind of arbitrary & made up by the manufacturer where one 200 treadwear tire might last longer than another brands 200 treadwear tire?
or is it by weight or something, but then maybe there's ways to cheat & manipulate the numbers by using cheaper or lesser feathers or something?
Wondering because I have a North Face puffer goose down jacket I bought a while ago that is 600 fill, so will this really be warner since it's 650? Or is that extra 50 not noticeable.. Or the fill #'s aren't standardized or uniform & is just whatever the manufacturer says?
Fill power is perhaps the most commonly misunderstood purchase decision factor. Usually a manufacturer will advertise a “fill power” of 650, 700, 850 etc. These numbers are a reference to the quality of the down insulation used. The number is actually a volume – the amount of cubic inches one ounce of down occupies. For example, one ounce of 800 fill power down will occupy 800 cubic inches when compressed by a standardized weight. If you use two ounces of 800 fill on jacket A, and two ounces of 700 fill on jacket B, jacket A –with the 800 fill down - will be warmer because it has more loft. However, a jacket may have eight ounces of 850 fill down and yet be of similar warmth to a jacket with twelve ounces of 650 fill down. The jacket featuring 850 fill down has similar warmth but will weigh less, and be more compressible, since it has less down in it. In other words, higher fill power down allows for better warmth-to-weight ratios.
How down is graded:
● “Fill power” measures how many cubic inches 1 oz. of down can fill inside a lab container.
● Fill power can range from 450 to 900. In outdoor gear, fill-power ratings commonly fall between 600 and 800.
● A higher fill power indicates higher quality and results in a lighter product.
● Premium down comes from very mature geese and is graded 750 to 800+.
