This is what I'll be doing. Hard to be a complete rifle for the price of that complete lower and this upper

Got one, actually doesn't look all that bad. Took it down, cleaned it up a bit. Reviews say it shoots well. At this time I personally have not shot though. I know it's a non chrome lined barrel, but for that price with free shipping pretty hard to beat. LOL,laugh out loud you can shoot quite afew thousand rounds before it really makes that much difference anyway...

I have ordered the PSA complete lower for 200 + 15 (magpul stock/grip) which makes it around 550 for a complete AR.. Smilie now just wait for PSA to ship them...

Tons of these things were ordered and shipped through late November and December and if they were all bad, we would know it. At least one of the Arfcom posts looks like a real quality issue, others are fairly ambiguous. Lots of others are reporting what they expected, a cheap rifle or upper that goes bang.

Fact is, not much is known about PTAC and PSA is purposefully being dodgy about the origin of the PTAC products. Only time will tell if the products are actually ok for the price or not, and if PSA allows the products continue to have quality issues.

Right now you should assume you are getting a low end rifle at a bottom line price that should none the less be very serviceable. If you have issues with yours, PSA will take care of you, albeit in a show fashion compared to a big name brand. But it is too early to just say the barrels are all garbage.

Having said that, regular PSA setups are only going to run you ~$120 more and that is money I would spend if buying right now. But there are also lots of guys out there buying these things to have a rifle in the trunk or bathroom, lol.

Agree 99%. I think that most people buying bottom of the barrel ARs right now just don't know the intricacies them, like how to check a build/barrel for accuracy at a bench with some groups, and/or at least look down the bore with a light and check for tooling marks [ !!! ]. So, I think a lot of shitty PTAC barrels have slipped through the cracks to guys that don't know better, but if they're happy with their AR, then all is cool with me, but I just won't be buying one.

Like you said, spend the extra benjamin and change for something that's a known quality.

Check the thread on arfcom about PTAC barrels. They are terrible.
This thread [ar15.com] has pictures of multiple uppers with issues (worn out rifling, tooling marks, beyond dirty).

Many people are upset with how PSA is handling the problem, not to mention the lack of information/relationship between PTAC and PSA. They aren't saying much, have locked/deleted multiple threads in the vendor area. Some have sent the uppers back, but are still waiting for new ones, as usual PSA is difficult to get in contact with, though they seem to slowly be responding to those on ar15.com.

One interesting post from someone who spoke to PSA said a batch of high round count test barrels somehow made it into the shipping channels (quote below). If it was a batch of test barrels that went out, there may still be hope for PTAC, as for their QC system, not so much.

I just receive a call from PSA. I can not remember the persons name now, but the person I spoke with sounded like he pretty well had the run of the place.

He wanted to let me know that they had already sent out my replacement upper. My return arrived there yesterday afternoon according to Ups.

He said they had set aside uppers for those 10 or so of us who recieved bad barrels.

I did not call them, they called me ( though I did IM them here). I thought that was pretty cool. I got the UPS notice about an hour before he called.

He also said that after this thread went out on arfcom and they saw it, they could not believe their eyes about the op's gun. They immediately went and started checking the PTACs but could not find anymore like it.

Then he saw several others in threads here and knew something had gone wrong.

They issued call tags for those affected and began trying to get to the bottom of the issue.

PTAC actually contacted PSA to see if some of their guys could tell them what they thought happened. Noone could figure it out really. The problem was that the rough cuts and lines in the bore did not even match the rifleing, they were straight so it did not make sense that a machine did it.

The conclusion was that these uppers were apparently some which had been torture tested. During the rush, and perhaps new hires in the season, these uppers accidentally got mixed in and a few went out.

He was very sorry it had happened.

PSA in my opinion has been very responsive through this to the customers it happened to.

For the record, I did shoot my first PTAC upper and it functioned flawlessly through 2 mags and the accuracy was not that bad even in a shot out barrel.

I am pretty confident that I will have a pretty good rifle for under 450$ when it is all over, even though it took a little while.

I will post back whem it comes in.
As hard as it is to get in contact with PSA and as slow as they are, I think I'm going to continue to sit back and watch from the sidelines for a while before I jump on a PTAC build. Hopefully they get everyone in that thread taken care of in a timely manner.

I was thinking to get the PSA upper with BCG/CH for about 130 more, but I think I'll compare PTAC with PSA and see what's the differences.
