The router I ended up purchasing and am now using is the Asus RT-N66u. Throughout my house on WiFi I get consistent minimum network speeds of 90-160 Mbps (over my home network depending on distance and walls between router and device).
When running speedtests I can now saturate my internet connection over WiFi (50+ Mbps down, 10+ Mbps up) from anywhere in the house.
If anyone is looking for a router and doesn't yet need the updated AC protocol I recommend the Asus RT-N66u. It typically retails for around $130 now. Whatever you do avoid the latest Linksys routers. I tried a handful of versions and price points in this trouble shooting and I never found a single model that would be stable throughout the house.
