Good drives, It sucks that its TD though as I'm in Illinois (tax) and the last time I had an issue with a drive bought at a retail store it just so happened it was the god awful seagates with the firmware issue. They wouldn't allow me to return it without a restock since the package was opened and wouldn't accept the fact that it was DOA right out of the package.

How reliable are these Toshiba drives vs the Seagate? i.e the failure rates?

On par with the other drive manufactures.
Backblaze, a cloud backup provider, recently recently a 3 year reliability study of 27,000 hard drives they have in their operation. Hitachi had the lowest hard drive failure rate of the major 3 manufacturers.
LINK [arstechnica.com]

Hitachi is the manufacturer of this drive for Toshiba. However, they were purchased by Western Digital last year, so that might have impacted their manufacturing process, etc. Also, take those results with a grain of salt because they were using consumer grade hard drives, and had them on 24/7, in a server configuration.

Actually, Western Digital only has Hitachi's laptop hard drive division. Toshiba now has Hitachi's desktop hard drive division.

Hitachi has been renamed as HGST, and it is owned by Western Digital. Toshiba hard drives are made by Toshiba themselves, but based on Hitachi technology.

The rebate form doesn't work.

TD also has the WD RED NAS drive at $99, with 3 year warranty, which is a better deal IMHO:

The rebate form does work. It won't be active for registration until 5 AM ET on 01/23/14.

And yes, the 3 TB WD Red HD is a good deal, but it only runs at 5400 RPMs and is designed more for NAS and server configurations.

I'm probably overstating the obvious, but just keep an eye on the valid dates -- one rebate is good 01/23-01/25, and the other expires 01/24, so to get the slickest deal, you need to buy between 01/23 and 01/24. Hoping TD has the $130 price for the next couple days. Smilie

I picked up 2 of those WD reds for a NAS. I'm curious though if these drives might work as well (or better?) in a NAS? I was thinking of getting a 2nd set of drives but only if it'd be worthwhile.
