Samsung Galaxy Note 3 S View Cover - Real vs Fake/Counterfeit

NextBillGates 327 251 January 23, 2014 at 01:06 PM
After recently obtaining a new Galaxy Note 3, I decided to try out the S View case. I didn't want a knockoff, so I looked for a US seller on eBay that was selling the authentic case. Well, I found a seller who had a handful for around $30 in retail packaging. Given the price and the US location, I figured they got them through a liquidation or something. Well, I was very wrong. What I received was a VERY good counterfeit replica! In fact, I'm impressed at how well they copied the original. It fit perfectly...but Samsung uses a chip so that only genuine Samsung accessories work with their phones...and while there have been attempts at replicating the chip, apparently they don't always work. Mine worked for about a week, then became flaky...I'd have to remove and replace the cover because it would stop responding. Then it stopped altogether. The seller even sent me a new chip, but it didn't work. I ended up going to Best Buy and buying a real cover, and figured I'd post the comparison here for future reference.

Main differences (other than a correctly operating chip):
- No hanging threads or tied stitches
- Better feel on the Samsung (real leather?)
- Touch response is better on the Samsung screen
- Imprints on front/back are clearer, more defined
- Counterfeit case triggers S View when you fully open the case (detects the magnet from the rear)
- "Retail box" did not contain Samsung 'genuine' foil

Lesson learned...

How do you like it? I have thought about getting one for my Note2 to replace the TPU case I have now.

I like it a lot. I've come to enjoy holding the phone with the flap open...something I wasn't sure of. The screen makes it nice, but if you have a lock it really limits what you can do with it (you can't actually view the incoming message). You can take photos with it too, and they are square, nice for uploading to Facebook. Not a ton of drop protection on the corners, and since the flap doesn't stay closed magnetically, it could come open if you dropped it.

I actually read that thread before I bought mine...in that post you can clearly see it's different, plus it doesn't have the chip at all, making the window useless. I really thought I was getting a real one...

I sent it back long ago, so I don't have the packaging. It was a white box with the Samsung logo on it. It opened from the top and had a clear window looking into the case. The back looked official as well, with descriptions and Samsung company info on it.

The real packaging is what you see at your local Best Buy. It had a hologram sticker as well.
