I think this is a fantastic deal that should be on the FP. As others mentioned, it could serve several possible roles:
- A good HTPC capable of 1080p playback through files, YouTube, or Netflix.
- A first computer for a senior or child.
- An inexpensive computer for traveling abroad (although I would prefer a $200 netbook for smaller size and longer battery life)
- A basic laptop for web browsing, MS Office, email, Netflix, etc.

The only major drawback is the lack of a CD drive-- not for the drive itself (I have not used any optical media in years, as everything is on the Internet or can be done through USB flash drives), but for the bay. In most other laptops, you can remove the DVD drive, insert a drive caddy in its bay, and install a cheap SSD (64GB) for your boot OS and most commonly used software, while using the included 500 GB mechanical drive for storage. In this machine you are stuck with one HDD, which means your options are:
1. Replace the HDD with a small (128GB) SSD, and have limited storage.
2. Put in a large SSD (256GB), which seems like a hefty investment for such an inexpensive machine.
3. Stick with the stock HD and suffer from mechanical HD speed, as well as having the machine gradually slow over time until it needs to be reformatted.
4. Put in a hybrid SSD (eg http://goo.gl/sOu7tu).

It looks like theres a removable slot on the right side of the laptop. I havent tried to pry it open yet though so Im not sure if theres any connectors in there. Maybe someone else can confirm? Asus says this series has an optical drive capability

I drove 80 miles to get this deal on Friday, and pickup one from one of the best buy location. This is a good price but the laptop is so cheap and so boxy when you press keys it sounds like you are hitting a hollow box. Laptop LCD seems like it's fading out color. The sleeve case which comes with the laptop barely fits the laptop. It could be a good gift if you are sending it for someone overseas. I just returned it on Saturday since I was able to grab me $95 dollar chromebook. I liked my chrome book better then 15 inch piece of crap. Nothing is better then price point.

This laptop is cheap but heavy and battery life reported to be not so good. I just bought a Acer C720 11.6" inch Chromebook [amazon.com] for $199. Actually, I paid about $169 refurbished on eBay. This one has a Haswell processor, which has a 8.5hour battery life and is much lighter. Also, bootup time is about 7 seconds and SSD hard drive.
I agree you on this chromebook are better then this piece of s***

The price online is $279. Did I miss it?
Or the price in store will be different?

This laptop has better specs in every regard aside from the build quality probably, not to mention being able to do vastly more since its a computer and not a internet browser machine.

I just set this computer for my Mom. Everything is as expected, a very basic laptop that will work fine for her. Touch pad is awful, definitely use a mouse with this. It actually has really great wifi reception so that is big improvement over her previous laptop. Very pleased for the price.

The copy of Kaspersky that comes with this says "Activated at purchase, install immediately." Anyone know if there is a key inside to activate, or if Best Buy has somehow preactivated it?

FYI this laptop does have a usable sata port inside. Open the laptop up and you will see a dummy cradle is in the place where the optical drive would be. One screw will remove it and open it up for you. Im using mine for a 2nd hard drive

How do you change out the hard drive and ram? How does the back piece come off?
