Ouch! That's a deal-killer.
It's easy enough to open up the case for battery access & replacement batts are available on ebay, but not sure if the factory batt is glued in or something like that. Anybody with "non user replaceable" lappy batty experience want to offer an opinion?

I recently got the 17" with i7 Haswell ($550) -- Plugged in 16GB of RAM + SSD and its a beast! -- Toshiba seemed to have greatly improved laptop quality. It is very quiet even while doing some Visual Studio work on it.
Where did you find the i7 version for $550?

Does this have a matte screen? Is the 6GB of ram in a 2x3 configuration?

It was a groupon for refurb machines in sept/oct 2013 -- When I received it only had 30 hours clocked on it and was almost new. However the bummer is its a 17" -- not very portable!

I think this one is. I have an Ivy Bridge version and the build quality is great. Feels lighter than it actually weighs due to the aluminum. The speakers are decent too.

I checked it out at BestBuy couple of weeks ago, this laptop has a glossy screen. Toshiba calls it Trubrite display. It is a nice display only when adjusted properly, meaning it's very dim, shows reflections and any off angle viewing is horrible. I put the brightness to full bright and it still looked dim inside BestBuy. This display would be pathetic outside and forget about using it at the beach.

Everything else on this laptop is great and the only reason I haven't gotten it is because the display is horrible and looks cheap. I don't understand since it is suppose to be a 1080 display but my 9 year old Toshiba (also with a Trubrite display back then) laptop display looks much better and brighter. I guess that's why they are trying to get rid of these.

If you live in a cave this would be an awesome laptop.

Update on these Toshiba's at BestBuy. I stopped in at BB last night and they have discontinued the P55-A5312 Toshiba laptop. It is no longer available on their website and at the store. The display one at the store was in their Clearance area with an Open Item price of $462. I compared the display of the P55-A5312 to the new version P55t-A5202. They have different displays and the P55t-A5202 is much nicer and brighter for some reason.

The reason I'm writing this is if you are really interested in the P55-A5312 I think these will show up at a lower price in the near future. I asked the BB computer people where all the unsold P55-A5312 laptops were that they had in stock and apparently all were sent back. I wonder where these go?

my order just arrived on thursday. I went through the setup process and the computer shut down in the middle of it. Now it won't start back up. Called in to tech support and they told me I had to return it for repair and charge me $25 for shipping. Told them it was BS but they said there was nothing they could do. Then I emailed customer support who told me they could credit me the shipping fee.

Just sharing my experience with this. Pretty unhappy about it all, but what can ya do.

Assuming you paid with credit card and you don't want to wait for repairs by Toshiba... look into your credit card's benefits, certain cards have warranty coverage for these situations or call up you credit card company and see what your options are, especially if it happens again with the repaired laptop.

Yeah, I thought about it. I used my Discover IT card, and although I don't know the full conditions, from what I remember from some black friday deals, they are pretty good about issuing refunds.

I just scheduled a repair with Toshiba, which I estimate will take ~2 weeks from today for them to ship me back the hopefully repaired laptop. It still sucks because I'll be without a laptop at home for this duration. If the laptop has any problems upon return, I'l definitely resort to other options. Thanks!

I got the laptop and found a dead pixel. It's very clear in the middle side. I bought this through ebay and contacted with toshiba. They gave me the shipping label and didn't say I had to pay for the return shipping. Will be very unhappy if the charge me $25 for shipping. I will never buy the refurbished laptop.

Just FYI for everyone, I found this info recently & thought I'd share. According to the following link, only Visa & Amex include refurbs under their extended warranties:

Oh, and Toshiba has renewed this deal a few times already, currently available through Feb 24th.
