First off even if they did do it for security it wouldn't need to be $80 more for the same capacity card. Second Sony has always tried proprietary storage since they lost in the beta vs. Vhs.
Not saying the pricing isn't overblown, but they tried open format memory on the PSP and it was a piracy disaster. The Vita lockdown to proprietary a memory system is a direct response to that, and it's been extremely effective so far.
A expensive memory card assures Sony that they make some money... even if piracy strikes. Even pirates would have to shell out for the expensive memory card and not just pick up any SD card anywhere.
