New Thread Listing Design Feedback

Marmotto February 20, 2014 at 02:08 PM
Hi everybody, thanks so much for being such great contributors to the Slickdeals community and taking the time to help us test the new Thread Listing design.

Please use this thread to let us know what you like, what you're missing, and what improvements you think could be made to the new design. It's still very much a work in progress so any feedback is good feedback.

Unfortunately, the "go to last page" link just makes that right column so cluttered with extra words now. I guess the text was put in instead of the small icon we have currently to make it more intuitive to users? I know lots of folks asked for it back, just noticing how wordy it looks. *That doesn't show up much in a forum like this where there are not long threads. But does in a thread like Drugstore/Grocery B&M where the threads can be super long.*

On the number of unread posts, I still lean to using the envelop with the number on it because it's sitting right next to the thread title. On a wide screen like I have, I have to trace across (the empty middle of the screen) to click on the unread posts.

The last page feature has been restored. If you look where there is the last poster name and time it now says "go to last page" Wink

laugh out loud I read up a little bit and noticed someone else talking about this. I did say I like to go to the last page, not that I necessarily read things on the last page. I don't have the attention span for that kind of shit. laugh out loud

Just FYI - the Last Page link appears under the exactly the same circumstances as before.

(Ie, the system has a method of deciding whether or not to show it, and that was not changed, we simply restored the link).

The reason for putting it in the last column is two fold - one, because it makes sense there and two - because its going to train people that the last column is the place to go to make it to the last page or last post (since people in this thread also didnt realize that you could click that to get to the last post).

It's no secret I never liked the number over the envelope anyways. It's obnoxious IMO. laugh out loud
No! Wrong!

Though it might be prettier making the black box/number fit inside the envelope icon all fancy-like.

Anyway, two things:
1) Having the 1,2,3,4,5....last page under the deal title in Hot Deals seems... unsightly, and mostly redundant, since few people will want to immediately jump to page 3 of a 5+ page thread. It looks like that's gone again, but just mentioning it since pretty sure I saw it back for a time the other day and it looked out of place having it back.

2) Normally, pressing the middle mouse button opens a link into a new, background tab. For some reason, using the middle mouse button on any link in the right category, (last poster, go to last page), opens the link in a background tab but also opens it in the current tab.

I still am forcing my self to use it and I do prefer the older version better.

As of today my 2 cents are I am glad the avatars went away and the unread column seems to be not needed. It looks nice, but I prefer the envelope unread count as I tend to read left to right.

I don't see the point of the number of unread above the envelope and the "1 unread" in the replies/views area. Were you planning on leaving both?

Also I agree about the + expand, I used that a lot. Frown

Iagree The number of unread hotlink on the right now makes that area more cluttered. I too miss the + expand feature.

As for the number box over the envelope, I think it wouldn't be so bad if it were a lighter shade in gray instead of a solid black.

Maybe not; but we'll test to see which one gets more usage. The text version obviously is a little more intuitive.
I have a suggestion that might address the complaints of several of the posters in this thread. Everyone hates the clock, but after thinking about it a while, I realized it does serve the purpose of anchoring the date/time/op info. However, it would be more helpful and pleasing to the eye if it switched places with the category tag.

From the perspective of a SD user, when you're skimming any forum page, the first things you look at are the title and category. So having them both on the left would make things easier to read and give it a cleaner look. I rarely look to see who the OP is, or look at the time and date as that is dealt with by how you choose to sort the threads, and I'm betting that's true for the majority of the SD users.

Are you letting the thread view fully load after posting a reply?
Had this happen again today, along with another glitch that happens quite frequently. When I posted in the thread and scrolled down to re-read my post, it wasn't there, this happens a lot, I had to refresh the page to see my new post. After viewing my post, I went out of the thread and the thread title was bold, with one new post and I was listed as the last poster. See the attachment.

I reverted back. I like the older version. This version just seems too long and jumbled for my eyes. If that makes sense.

We've got some upcoming changes rolling out soon:

- Adjusted when thumbnails appear/disappear
- Made more use of the space on larger monitors
- Restored "Last Page" link in the last column - note it didnt always appear before, and we're using the same old logic (ie only appears for threads with enough pages)
- Removed avatars on last poster until we can solve the animation issue
- Adjusted spacing for categories
- Increased title size

i think something weird is going on.... when i reply to a thread it decides there are unread posts (the post i just made) it didn't use to do that...
