New Thread Listing Design Feedback

Marmotto February 20, 2014 at 03:08 PM
Hi everybody, thanks so much for being such great contributors to the Slickdeals community and taking the time to help us test the new Thread Listing design.

Please use this thread to let us know what you like, what you're missing, and what improvements you think could be made to the new design. It's still very much a work in progress so any feedback is good feedback.

Fixed header was only in Redesign, never Classic. The only difference you would have noticed up until now was the fixed header and a different front page view ( thats all that changed in redesign before the recent forum change ). So you probably have been on Redesign all along and didn't notice till now when the forums changed. Smilie

I think thats where the confusion lies. Redesign has been live for awhile, just not the forums.
For all practical purposes that is pretty much two separate redesigns. I was okay with the changes that were already in place. To have such a drastic change in the look of the forums 7 months later doesn't seem like the same redesign on our end as users.

We got suckered in with a version of the ol' bait and switch. We got sweet-talked by a cute new Slickdeals sometime last year and we got used to hanging out with her. Then when we finally get her to take her clothes off it turns out she has a penis.

I understand, I do. But please do know, they are listening and are taking everything within reason into consideration, they always have. I will never pretend to know how the dev side of things goes, because I really don't. But I do know they read this, have meetings discussing things and are constantly working on this. Having a list of things the members love ( like the header ) and a list of things they hate ( like the spacing and shading ) really gives them something to go on.

It's like a pregnant women after 9 long months, giving birth and everyone coming out going "OMFG your baby is so ugly, please put it back in". Not everyone thinks babies are cute when they are first born. But with time, their head takes a normal shape, the wrinkly skin goes away, and everyone wants to hang out and play with them.

Don't lose faith in them yet. Smilie

I haven't lost faith yet. I'm just being very vocal about the things that should be obvious.

As much as I think the redesign view looks horrible I continue to try it. I think most people who don't like it are just switching to classic and not saying anything at all. It is just frustrating because we went through this exact thing a year ago and we were told over and over again that we were wrong. Right up until the point when it turned out we were right after all and the updates were abandoned. I thought something was learned from that experience but here we are again.

For me, the problem with the redesign is the loss of features, the spacing, (and therefore the vast areas of white hurting your eyes) and the screwed up icons and missing quotes.

Why can't they put some graduated shading on the posts like they have on the front page deals? It could even be a different color than gray to tell the two apart. Then it would be easier to stay on the redesign and give feedback.

Losing features/tools seems a step back. I can understand wanting clean uncluttered pages but removing tools we use regularly for the sake of an uncluttered forum is a step back.

As for the icons, there are several people (non-loungers) who post good deals or give great advice and who (to me at least) are more recognizable by their icon than their name, so by taking away the OP's icon, it makes it harder to figure out who you're dealing with and if the deal/advice is to be trusted. Why take the OP's icon away and why make the other icons so small to the point you can't make out what some of them are?

What makes the latest changes in the redesign so frustrating is that many of the problems that are being brought up were already resolved in classic. As acesmuzic showed us the shading was already in place in front page view in classic. That didn't get there by accident. I'm guessing they already knew it needed to be there to make the page look better. Why was that shading not in the redesign from the start when clearly it was needed? Also in the front page view in classic the avatars are animated as they are supposed to be. They are still smaller than in forum view but at least they are larger than the tiny avatars in the redesign. If they work in front page view in classic then why is it broken in the redesign in the same view?

The shading in classic was just a style choice at the time, not because it was required for reading posts, and animation isn't broken, it's disabled intentionally in redesign.

Temporarily disabled or permanently? What about the size?

What?! No more watching Pig being chased by Schooby in her bus?! No more watching Iaaaiws slamming his head into the ground?! Please tell me it will be turned back on soon.

BTW, we still can't quote the OP in threads. I had to switch back today to do so.

That's one of those things we disabled for launch to see what user feedback was like. I'll add your two votes to the "animate them!" bucket. Smilie

Avatars still show up in the new view even though I have the box unchecked in my options.
