New Thread Listing Design Feedback

Marmotto February 20, 2014 at 02:08 PM
Hi everybody, thanks so much for being such great contributors to the Slickdeals community and taking the time to help us test the new Thread Listing design.

Please use this thread to let us know what you like, what you're missing, and what improvements you think could be made to the new design. It's still very much a work in progress so any feedback is good feedback.

Hi Majide, would you happen to have a screenshot of this? I'm not sure if I'm not seeing the split column or just not quite understanding what you mean. Smilie

Thanks so much for the rest of your feedback. Super helpful stuff!
Here you go. Ohh, it isn't split, it's just not in the right column. Everything is shifted over to the right, so the Last Poster isn't in the Last Post column.
And you can also see how there are no tags for the My Sticky items.
And although I posted in the Vacations and Post Whore threads, there isn't an unread button (though I did see this mentioned as a known bug).

remember how many of us hated that when it first appeared laugh out loud
I still hate how it overlaps with the icons. I never had a problem with it existing, just that it was badly positioned.

makes sense. like a lot of other things here even if you don't like certain things eventually you just get used to it, so now it doesn't bother me anymore laugh out loud

Don't like it and at this point, I don't see what you are trying to "improve". A little re-arranging, couple of bells and whistles that's it - just leave it the heck alone.

A ridiculous amount of white space to add photos, that do absolutely nothing to help with navigation or aesthetics.

Much prefer store icons, especially when they were easily used to sort. Now the sort function appears to be gone.

The ignore button is gone. Seriously I don't care what's on sale in California and the nearest Rite Aid is 800 miles away.

I don't need or want cutesy. Don't need pictures and avatars everywhere, if I did, I'd visit WUC.

If you are trying to make this more mobile friendly, it needs to be kept computer friendly at the same time. I would suggest.

Removing who was the original author of the thread, as well as the thumbs up ratings and the reply/viewed counts. These may be important to Hot Deals, but they seem somewhat irrelevant for the Drugstore/Grocery threads.

Then the page numbers, last page, first unread etc. can be made a little more prominent and viewer friendly.

I do not see the point of preview. On PC at least. I wonder if this adds to the overall views of the op?

How is it super hard to find threads with category icons missing?

There is still a category link next to each thread, it's just not an icon. Not that I ever used that feature anyways.
It's hard to see that category link under the thread name buried with the name of the OP/date/pages, etc. Also, in Drugstore/Grocery, a lot of threads do not have an image I guess in the first post so there is dead space where the category icon used to be or an image that doesn't make sense for the thread. Here's a screen shot. In a thread like DS/GS, the category icons are used more than I would guess other threads.

Edited: I see where the picture works for the Hot Deals thread to show the item picture, but compare these two pictures and it leaves other threads with blank space (where the category picture used to be) or a picture that may not make sense for the thread.

Oh, I thought you were talking about Hot Deals. I'm rarely in the Grocery Section, so I wouldn't know the difference.

Although, I don't think the Beta was ever designed with that section in mind. It was designed mainly for Hot Deals and they said they are aware of the dead space and that it will probably be rectified on a future update.

Maybe it would help if SD designers told us why they want these changes in the first place. I'm having a very hard time seeing any benefit to the change at all.

Is it just something to do and keep busy???

If anything make the site simpler, faster to navigate and certainly not more complex....

Way to many freebie forums for instance.

I think most of us go to maybe three to five sub forums and that's it. which means most of SDeals is completely wasted and a turn off.

I think they are trying to make it easier/simpler/faster for mobile users. So... they honestly aren't trying to make it worse or anything. It'll just take work to make it better for everyone, which is why it's in beta.

And what do you mean about Freebie Forums? There are only three sub-forums. I go to the magazines one, and like that it is separate. Though in my opinion, I would like it if it was in the drop-down menu. I don't like all the clicking to get there.

Maybe like this:

But that's all off-topic anyway...

Hm, so there are a few people that seem to like the avatar display for last poster.
I don't like it, not one bit, and I don't like the product images in Hot Deals either. I don't want any images in the thread listing pages.

i'm still not loving but gonna give it a chance for a little longer.

after one night i find that i'm also missing/disliking:

-the category icons. at least in the lounge, having a black tag with text i have to read, that's in a variable location (depending on length of username), over an icon in a static location that was easy to scan, enabling me to tell what the thread was instantly, reduces functionalitity.

-as someone else said, i'm not sure why the most recent poster is important enough to need a thumbnail of their avy in the thread list. it just makes the page look more cluttered imo. if someone's avy had to show, it would make more sense to show the op (somewhere...not on the right like that), but my preference would be to have none.

-i've seen a few threads now that have the first unread link (i know there is still a display bug you're working on). i prefer it aligned on the left as it used to be, as it was a consistent place to click (and my eye likes things to be lined up laugh out loud), but now that i know where to look it's not the end of the world if i have to get used to it being somewhere else, particularly if the reasoning is an improvement in usability, rather than simply moving just for the sake of moving it

ETA: i use first unread way too often to stick with the beta for much longer if that bug doesn't get fixed soon. it's also the biggest reason why i don't use the app much, bc it's just too hard to follow an active thread if you have to click "last" and then go back to find where you left off.

- +1 for me on the missing ignore thread button.

i think that's all for now
Iagree With all of the bold. (Didn't see it earlier, probably while I was typing)
I like to be able to skim things for information. "Okay, this thread is about food" "Okay, this one is a game" And being able to reliably find information in the same place every time - not moving around.

Though I also agree that I can get used to it if it is to make things easier over all. I guess I'd honestly prefer a column for other things to keep it consistent.

i went to hot deals for the first time just now...i def don't like the thread images either. it doesn't help me figure out what kind of item the deal is for, most of the time, and many of them are irrelevant, or you can't even tell what it is, so it's completely useless.

this is what it looks like currently for me

Please bring the first unread button back to all threads, not just those over 5 pages.

When I select "Showing 80 results per page" it does not seem to stay. I am not a web dev but can that be added to the cookie?

I never used this particular feature before but now with the images I am trying to get the most out of it. That may have been like that in the other version and I just never payed attention to it.

I opted out of the BETA thing and now everything in the DS forum is in some weird order. All of the RA threads are clumped together, as are wags, etc., etc.

ETA: And I'm seeing multiples of the SAME thread. WTH???? Huh
Great, now I'm unsure whether to opt out Frown
