becareful in buying these phones to use on other networks, new rules went into effect in Jan 2014, ... so don't do it, for other networks, only metro pcs.
it made it illegal to unlock them and the prices to unlock went through the roof, if you find someone out of country to do it for you.
if you want to have metro pcs do it, you have use phone for 3 months at 40-50 dollars per month charge ... then they will unlock it for you. Not worth it.

I have an unlocked MetroPCS LG phone that is being used for Tmobile
So this means the phone will get banned? or is now illegal to unlock MetroPCS phone and thus my phone is unaffected?

If it's already unlocked you are good to go, the new law started in jan 2014, before that, you could legally have it unlocked via ebay or other ways. So everybody that did it before jan 2014 are ok. I'm just alerting new people of the law changes and the very high cost to try to unlock it "out of country" illegally.

The MetroPCS phone is locked to only work on MetroPCS
no law needed, unless unlocked it will not work on any other network in the first place

the phone is a very good phone, but only buy it if you intend to use it with MetroPCS service.

Being that I work for MetroPCS, I figured I'd chime in to clarify some things:
COVERAGE: If you are using a GSM phone on Metro, the coverage is EXACTLY THE SAME as T-mobile. We even use the same T-mobile APN settings when activating unlocked phones. Older CDMA phones from Metro will only ever work on the carrier's original network...at least up until it gets scrapped and refarmed as LTE.
PRICE: The phone typically retails for $99 online or in-store. The sale knocks off $50 instantly, bringing the total to $49 up front. If purchased at a corporate store, the employees are REQUIRED to activate the phone on either a a new or existing MetroPCS account. Phones purchased through metropcs.com DO NOT require you to activate at the point of sale. Plans for new activations start at $40 for individual or $35 each for family plans of 2 or more.
Oh and the 4 for $100 plan is a promotion offer that is run roughly once a year and isn't currently available unless you're already grandfathered. Even if you are on a 4 for $100 plan, it must be the version offered during Holiday 2013 to be compatible with GSM handsets.

REBATE: The additional $20 MiR ONLY applies if you activate the phone and it MUST REMAIN ACTIVE until the rebate center verifies your claim. Rebate takes 12 weeks from the time it's received AND verified. The typical time between them receiving and verifying is 3-4 weeks. Any lapse or interruption of service before it being veried can and almost always does result in your rebate being denied.
So in other words, you might as well not bother with the rebate unless you want to use it on MetroPCS.
UNLOCKING POLICY/LAW: First off, their's no law against unlocking phones. The law that expired last year was one that forced carriers to assist customers in the unlocking process, therefore allowing them to deny your request to unlock a phone. However, due to public outrage from consumer advocate groups, an agreement to provide consumers with unlocking their devices was signed by the 5 largest carriers late 2013:
http://bit.ly/1h3XS1G

The agreement says that if requested, carries must provide the unlock code after the contract agreement or in the case of prepaid, within 1 year of service. Metro's specific policy is they will provide the unlock code after 90 days of service.

Hope this helps.

So many phones on Metro. What's the best overall phone under $100 on Metro?

My wife broke the screen on her T-Mobile 521. Will her SIM work with one of these, or would she have to switch over to Metro? Even without the rebate, this would be cheaper than what anyplace would charge to fix her screen.
