Starting today, at Target (see flyer), the Kyocera Hydro Android 3G phone will be at $9.99 (Reg. 59.99). I know previous deals from Radioshack have hit the front page.

For more details, http://www.target.com/p/boost-kyo...A-14782670

Besides the phone, this can be used for other uses (see http://slickdeals.net/f/6559288-kyocera-hydro-prepaid-smart-phone-9-99-at-target-b-m-70-off)

Cheers!

Anyone else having delays with the Netflix code? I received a confirmation email on Mar 15 saying I would get the code within 48 hours, but 3 days later, nothing. Sent a support request that also claims to reply within 48 hours, waiting on that.

On the rain check, it says "Note: This item has limited availability and may not be replenished."

I've also checked the stock on different target locations, CA, NY, TX and they were out of stock. Does that mean the hydros are really going to be discontinued this time? whats the point for kyocera or boost to have different hydro models?

does anybody here have this activated on ringplus and have gotten a warning? I used to have mine on ringplus but I removed it out of fear of being disconnected.

Just went through the same process. After waiting 48 hours, for 2 of my netflix codes, I e-mailed support and I got my codes within 48 hours of e-mailing support.

I am not capable of rooting this phone properly. Without rooting it am I going to keep getting; activation notices & what's your mobile number, every time I go to Pandora? Is there an easy way to stop those messages?
Thanks Anne

I am in the same boat. I've rooted the device successfully, and also turned off the cell radio to extend battery life. {though this resets after I power off - am I doing something wrong???} However, I am brand new to Android and tablets, so I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly what they mean in the wiki regarding turning off the really annoying reminder popup that comes up each and every time I turn the unit on.

Here is what I don't understand:

>and superuser privileges granted to file manager app [ES File Explorer (1.5 Cupcake) >works])

I need more detailed information. How do I grant "superuser privileges to a file manager app" ? I found ES File Explorer 1.5 cupcake on Google Play.

However, it seems to be saying NOT to install if using Android 2 or newer .... why is that?

Anyway, this isn't clear to me, probably because I just started using Android. If someone could add a few more steps to the wiki, or here, for us newbies, it would be appreciated. Thanks!

1.5 Cupcake = a old version of Android the only reason to use it was for rooting with Poot? Uninstall and grab the full version of ES File Explorer for ICS.

Open App > Menu Soft Button > Tools > Scroll down to Root Explorer > Toggle On > Authorize Superuser > Proceed with caution to delete/edit files.

So i'm posting this here to let you guys know that this deal is not dead!. It seems that you can use your rainchecks to still get the substituted edge phone if the store has not received any yet. This is YMMV on the manager still if they allowed it in the first place but i had no issue. Technically they didn't even use my rain check as they never asked for it.

I've blotted out the specific store in order to stop a dozen people going to this store only and ruining possible future deals like this

Actually.. I don't know why they need version 1.5. I just used the regular ES File Explorer version you can find from the Play Store and you can do everything the same. You just need to enable ROOT access from the menus, and then be able to mount /system to be read/write.

My guess is that the tutorial is old which is why it said to use that version.

This might help Ann, slugbug and some others. Think some detail is missing in the wiki about rooting and changing the apk extensions to stop the activation. Hope the below helps.

You're stuck with activation unless you a)activate the phone. Can even do the daily plan for $3. That's the simplest way. And if you ever need the phone in an emergency it could be an easy way to go in the future to pay $3 for the day. Option two below is the other way, and I'm leaving out the computerless rooting method so do not bother downloading the cupcake version of es file explorer. Don't see how that method is simpler unless you don't have access to a computer.

The 2nd option is the rooted option. I've rooted two Hydros via the Root Wizard method. It is very easy as long as you just follow simple directions which I listed below from the wiki.

-Install the drivers first for your computer. Download the appropriate one from the links below and install.
32 Bit Windows: http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/s...up_x86.msi
64 Bit Windows: http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/s...up_x64.msi

-Enable USB Debugging in Settings->Developer Options

-Download http://www.shuame.com/root.html [Root Wizard]. The site is not in English. Just hit the big green button to download. The program itself is in English.

-Launch the program, connect your phone and follow the directions.

You then need to go to the play store and download two apps:
BusyBox [google.com] and Superuser. I like SuperSU from Chainfire. [google.com]

These two things were missed in the wiki I believe. Superuser (SuperSU) is what grants your apps permission to have root access and make system type changes you don't have access to if you don't have root. You're basically getting additional functionality by having root access. And apparently these two things aren't needed. Probably more habit than anything putting these on. Has been standard with all the other phones I've rooted. So disregard the two above files if you like.

Now you're fully rooted. Now you need to download a file explorer with root capability. My one of choice is ES File Explorer [google.com]. Don't use the cupcake version. That was only for that computerless rooting method. Download the normal version and delete the cupcake one if you have it.

Once that is downloaded, open it up and hit the 3 dot menu capacitive button on the phone. You get the menu on the left side.
-Go to Tools and scroll down to Root Explorer and turn it on. I think you'll see the grant superuser priveleges.
-Now press on Root Explorer and you'll get a pop up menu. Press on Mount R/W
-go to /system and press on the radial button under RW. That gives you permission to make changes in the system folder.

So now we're going to get rid of the handsfree activation. This is done by disabling (not deleting) the apps that activate the activation. You're essentially going to rename the .apk extension to .bak. This way if you wanted to use it as a phone you could go back and change the extensions back again. So here we go...

In ES File Explorer, at the top bar it probably has you on / sdcard. You want to hit the back slash so it says Device at the top. Then go to system -> app.

Now you want to find three files:
Mms.apk (has the message icon)
Phone.apk (Phone icon)
TelephonyProvider.apk (also the Phone icon)

Long press on each one (only one at a time), hit Rename and change apk to bak and hit ok. That should do the trick.

Restart your phone and you should be good to go.

The cupcake version was used to do the computerless rooting method. It's not needed otherwise. I created my own little rooting and activation disabling tutorial and think it's a little more complete to help the newbs. Little things like downloading busybox and superuser along with giving the system folder read/write access seem to be overlooked.

Thanks so much! It felt kind of good renaming files to *.bak - almost like I was back in DOS. Now there's no more annoyance on bootup!

- I got the programs installed, but now they are on the "main" page (desktop?), along with the games where my 5 year old could find them VERY easily. I'm going to let him play some of the games on our upcoming trip.

I have figured out that there seem to be 4 screens that you can scroll to left and right. For some reason SU installed to the screen farthest to the left, which is fine by me. I guess I'd like to put utilities and such that I wouldn't want my son getting into as much way over there. Is there a simple way to drag them over to that screen, instead of the main one?

*rest of my wish list:
a) change bootup screen
b) permanently turn off cell radio (seems to re-enable on bootup) to save battery
c) find a good version of MAME for this thing - assuming there is one
d) find a decent bluetooth handheld game controller (I just can't imagine playing Ms. Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Frogger, etc. without one)
