Starting today, at Target (see flyer), the Kyocera Hydro Android 3G phone will be at $9.99 (Reg. 59.99). I know previous deals from Radioshack have hit the front page.

For more details, http://www.target.com/p/boost-kyo...A-14782670

Besides the phone, this can be used for other uses (see http://slickdeals.net/f/6559288-kyocera-hydro-prepaid-smart-phone-9-99-at-target-b-m-70-off)

Cheers!

Looking for custom ROMs for your new Hydro/Hydro Edge? Well sign here and hopefully developers will be able to make some sooner. [change.org]

This phone will not work on AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile. It only runs on Sprint's network and is locked to Boost Mobile.

For those with R+ (ringplus phone service) question:
R+ does NOT officially support non Sprint branded phones. Some have luck activating on R+, some reported they have been kicked from R+. I do know for certain that R+ now contains better database of phones model, which previously it didn't. So, checking esn on R+ will label it as Boost Hydro xxxxxx yyyy, which will be listed as part of your R+ account profile/"Device Details" if activated. Currently, unable to modify the device details. It maybe or NOT be even activated now. Even if activated, you may/may not be kicked out of R+.
So do it at your own risk.

It would be awesome to get Cyanogenmod for the Hydro and Hydro Edge. If anyone can contribute to that by developing or getting the word out, that would be awesome!

Didn't Target run out last time and allowed substitutions on any prepaid phone at the same percentage off?

Believe it or not, I've still never owned a smart phone, although I have a very high quality regular one, on Verizon (off contract), but paying way too much a month for an unlimited plan. The review on the Kyocera says it's only 2" wide by 4.53" high. That sounds tiny for a smart phone. Could someone advise me whether I should consider this as a full time phone, and if so, what is the cheapest avenue for getting unlimited talk. Limited text and internet are acceptable.
I use my droid which was formerly used on Verizon with Page Plus. They have monthly plans ranging for $12-$55. Customer service was pretty bad a couple of years ago but has gotten much better. This phone would be fine for calling, texting and limited internet use, not on page plus though.

How does activation (or no activation) work with this at Target? I just want to buy the phone and walk out without activation and without being hassled at Target.
You're out of luck. They actually send you to a Radio Shack kiosk after finalizing the sale, where the employees berate you about how they are suppose to activate all phones and they could lose their job for selling non-activated phoneslaugh out loud (j/k-you can buy the phone without activating...)

No activation of service is required. They have to scan the phone as purchased, but it can be used without setting up service.

They may ask you if you want to activate the phone, but they can't require it. (Unless the ad specifically states "activation required.)

A few people got hassled at Radio Shack when they tried to buy the Event for $15 a few weeks back, but a majority didn't have a problem. If they ask activation you can say it's a gift or just be straight with them. "I'm not gonna use this as a phone. I just want it for the WiFi/GPS/waterproof-ness/etc."

Good luck.

If you get a crap android phone and it is your first one, I think it will ruin your first impression about android, and hate it from then on. My first android was dell streak 5 and I was so dissapointed at the OS but fine with the form factor. I almost gave up on android but Nexus S made me reconsider and now I'm a heavy android user. I had note1, htc one, note3.
Don't ruin your android experience by going super cheap. If you want super cheap get at least a Moto G, otherwise go for WindowsPhone nokia 520 or apple's iphone5/4s or something.

If its not too much about budget but more about user experience and form factor iphone 5s is very easy for everyone, even a grandma. Moto x is also a good choice.

Bought 2 last time; rooted and removed most of the pre-installed apps and most Google apps. Worked fine as free phones (for calls and texts). Plan to buy another one (a perfect $10 Android phone to replace a Samsung flip phone). Smilie

Service Provider is Boost Mobile, powered by the Sprint Nationwide Network.
- some have reported activating on Ring+ (also Sprint).
