Deal Details

Update 3/14: acdawg reports that a CSR confirmed that membership gifts do not expire, even though they can only be sent up to one year in advance. This potentially means you could buy multiple gift memberships and just redeem them one at a time every time your membership expires. See his original post here and please rep him for this information. An additional source would be nice to confirm this before people proceed to buy several "gifts".
ttp86 was also able to verify that via chat. A CSR specifically verified that you can buy five gift memberships for yourself and redeem them over 5 years. His full transcript can be found here. please rep him if you find it useful.

Didn't see this posted and while this isn't a hot deal I thought many people here would be interested as many of us rely on Amazon Prime for many Amazon deals.

Might be a good idea to renew your membership before 4/17 to take advantage of the current rates.

Additional details with the 4/17 date:

If your membership expires after 4/17 and you want another year at the current price, buy a gift membership and set it to send the day after your current one expires. More details here
Please rep orick for this tip!

Edit: an interesting article on the reasons behind this [cnn.com]. I find the profit margin graph amazing. I knew Amazon wasn't making a lot of money, I didn't know they practically just break even!

Edit: Time Magazine mentioned this thread! [time.com] Thanks AlwayzJ for the reference.

If your current Prime membership is scheduled to expire on or after April 17th, and therefore would auto-renew at the $99 price, you can effectively lock in the $79 price by taking the following steps:

(1) Look up your Prime expiration date. (Let's say yours is June 11th.)

(2) Purchase a Prime Gift Membership here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/prime/p...ng_landing

Set the delivery date as the date after your membership expires (in this case, June 12, 2014).

Enter your own e-mail address as the gift recipient. It is okay if this is the exact e-mail address already associated with your Amazon Prime account.

Place order (total will be $79).

(3) Turn off your Prime auto-renew.

(4) On the day after your membership expires, you will receive an e-mail from Amazon with the gift membership. Follow the instructions to apply it to your account.

This is a pretty straightforward way to save $20.

I'm getting conflicting answer from the chat agents, they don't have a clue why some are getting the emails basically saying they are grandfathered in.

Is that based on billing address or shipping address?
Tax is generally based on shipping address. If you live in NC and ship to DE, you are charged no tax.

Wow....I don't use the streaming services either and don't think the 2 day shipping is worth $99. Most of my purchases are on their jacked up subscribe and save program anyways so I for one will not be renewing my prime membership.
if your not paying the student price you are doing it wrong.

I do make a lot of ridiculous impulse buys with prime. I'm a heavy user. Don't use the video streaming. Netflix for that. I am going to let Prime drop. My Amazon spending is about $ 1500 a year. If I do need an item in 2 days (very rare), or order an expensive item, I'll pay extra per order. I understand Amazon doing the increase. I just wish they would separate the free streaming from the rest.

Not having Prime is saving me lots of money since a lot a impulse buys now are no longer deals without the free shipping and since I barely used the streaming there was no reason to keep it.

Over all, I think this the price increase is just going to lose more sales.

I'm not overly upset with this, but it does piss me off that just about anything that ships with prime costs 5-20% more than just getting something from another vendor, so it seems the cost of shipping is being built into some items. Also, many items are becoming "add on" items, meaning you have to order at least $25 worth of stuff to get free shipping.

I save $100 in shipping fees in a month or two. No brainer.

I will be canceling when my membership is up for renewal, its only connivence that keeps me signed up. Another company that don't give a crap about customer loyalty .
Facepalm
Would you rather Amazon raise the price $1.67 a month to help keep their company as is that folks have come to expect or for them to never raise prices and eventually go out of business. Im sure if this post was about Amazon going out of business, most post here would magically change to "I'd pay the extra $20 to keep Amazon around"

Those getting their 2014 renewal (after 4/17) @ $79 and not being increased to $99, how much do you order annually from Amazon? How often do you have things shipped via Prime?

Just trying to make some sense of why some (NOT ME Frown) are getting grandfathered. TIA

Not only did amazon start charging tax in NC recently (without a shipping center in state?).....but now this. I'll have to think hard about renewal this next time around.
Thanks for the heads up.
It's your state that's charging the tax...not amazon.

They do care, but not as much as they care about staying in business or satisfying Wall Street.

Unless your renewal occurs in a few weeks, I wouldn't waste my energy since I, and others, are seeing the same issue with the renewal price inconsistency between the email and the website. I am just waiting to see what happens as Amazon will soon realize their mistake.
