Update 3/14: acdawg reports that a CSR confirmed that membership gifts do not expire, even though they can only be sent up to one year in advance. This potentially means you could buy multiple gift memberships and just redeem them one at a time every time your membership expires. See his original post here and please rep him for this information. An additional source would be nice to confirm this before people proceed to buy several "gifts".
ttp86 was also able to verify that via chat. A CSR specifically verified that you can buy five gift memberships for yourself and redeem them over 5 years. His full transcript can be found here. please rep him if you find it useful.

Didn't see this posted and while this isn't a hot deal I thought many people here would be interested as many of us rely on Amazon Prime for many Amazon deals.

Might be a good idea to renew your membership before 4/17 to take advantage of the current rates.

Additional details with the 4/17 date:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/cus...=200966690

If your membership expires after 4/17 and you want another year at the current price, buy a gift membership and set it to send the day after your current one expires. More details here
Please rep orick for this tip!

Edit: an interesting article on the reasons behind this [cnn.com]. I find the profit margin graph amazing. I knew Amazon wasn't making a lot of money, I didn't know they practically just break even!

Edit: Time Magazine mentioned this thread! [time.com] Thanks AlwayzJ for the reference.

Prime 30-day free trial: http://www.amazon.com/gp/video/pr...ckdeals-20

IF YOU ALREADY HAVE PRIME, CHECK YOUR EMAIL. You may not have to renew by 4/17 to get the new rate. People have received emails that their 2014 renewal, regardless of date, will be the same. So if your renewal comes December, 2014, you may not see the higher rate until December, 2015. Do not jump the gun and renew without checking this first.

Price Increases suck.

But you do have until 3/19 to sign up for prime at the current 79/39 rate!!!

From the Amazon Website
If your membership renews before April 17, 2014, you'll be charged at a membership rate of $79. If your membership renews on or after April 17, 2014, you'll be charged at a membership rate of $99.

The annual charge for Amazon Prime includes FREE Two-Day Shipping, Prime Instant Video, and the Kindle Owner's Lending Library.

If you didn't intend to convert your membership to a full 12-month membership, you can cancel your Amazon Prime membership on the Manage Prime Membership page. If you haven't placed an Amazon Prime-eligible order, you are eligible for a full refund.

When we renew your membership, the card you gave us at sign-up is used. If we can't successfully charge this card, another payment method will be used. Your initial sign-up authorizes us to use the preferred or other available payment methods. To update your preferred card, go to Manage Prime Membership.

INSTRUCTIONS TO LOCK IN $79 RATE
Quote from orick View Post :
If your current Prime membership is scheduled to expire on or after April 17th, and therefore would auto-renew at the $99 price, you can effectively lock in the $79 price by taking the following steps:

(1) Look up your Prime expiration date. (Let's say yours is June 11th.)

(2) Purchase a Prime Gift Membership here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/prime/p...ng_landing

Set the delivery date as the date after your membership expires (in this case, June 12, 2014).

Enter your own e-mail address as the gift recipient. It is okay if this is the exact e-mail address already associated with your Amazon Prime account.

Place order (total will be $79).

(3) Turn off your Prime auto-renew. (End membership - at expiration)

(4) On the day after your membership expires, you will receive an e-mail from Amazon with the gift membership. Follow the instructions to apply it to your account.

This is a pretty straightforward way to save $20.
Answer from Amazon CSR regarding expiration of Prime gift memberships: "The membership gift will never expire as long as it isn't cancelled or redeemed. For example, if the recipient received the gift on January 1st but has a current membership through March 1st, the recipient can wait until March 2nd to redeem the gift membership."

HOW TO CANCEL AMAZON PRIME AUTO RENEW:

Quote :
Go to Manage Prime Membership [amazon.com].
Review the renewal date listed on the left-hand side of the page.

If you currently have an Amazon Prime free trial, click Do Not Continue .
If you currently have a paid Amazon Prime membership, click End Membership .

Turn off your renewal using the link below the renewal date.

Note: Your membership will expire at the end of the current period. It will NOT end before your current paid subscription is over, nor can you cancel it early for a refund.

I think we all should cancel our memberships and show them how much business they will loose!!! woot

I have until next January then I will cancel .... This is total BS!!!!
They will see a slight decline for a brief period of time, but eventually, especially during the holidays, folks will fold and pay the higher price and just be use to it and talk about old days when it was $20 cheaper. They will loose nothing...sorry. Nono

Just FYI, you can purchase Prime Gift memberships and denote a delivery date up to 1 year in advance... Might be useful for those wanting to keep prime.
Can you use the gift membership on your own account?

I'm still on the Amazon Student trial. I wish there was a way I could lock in the old yearly rate before I actually convert to the full paid membership.
You should be able to just pay for the upgrade. The student trial excludes the video streaming service, but if you go ahead and pay early, you get the rest of the features early.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/student/signup/info

Luckily my student trial just ended at the beginning of this month and I got in on the cheaper rate.

Folks always use hot deals for news, because they feel it won't get maximum attention anywhere else on this site. Dontknow

And since its shows to be a popular thread, mods will leave it as such for a period of time.

no, but I did tell my folks to avoid using the brakes to get better fuel economy.

just let your foot off the gas early to avoid breaking, and don't tailgate.

Ah, I see. Thanks

And in other news about Amazon Prime
http://abcnews.go.com/Business/am...d=22882043

Interesting article but I think my argument would be that even with the cost inflated to make it seem like "free shipping" it is generally still cheaper than B&M stores or other online retailers so theoretically you are still saving money which is what our goal is anyway.

Anyway, I figured a price increase was coming soon given that a lot of my packages lately have been shipped via UPS SmartPost which is allegedly cheaper for them (and more inconvenient for me as UPS by themselves would deliver it a day earlier) and also some of the packaging has been different than usual and has seemed a little cheap compared to previous years.

I am thinking with the amount we're saving between Warehouse deals - Prime video getting WAY better - and the immense amounts saved on 2 day shipping for free, it's worth the extra $20 a YEAR Big Grin

Thnanks OP!

I cancelled mine when they started charging taxes in GA, it was just not worth it. And instead of making it more attractive because of the automatic 6-8% price increase on everything, they go and increase the price of Prime? LOL

Thanks OP. Checked mine and thankfully it renews at the start of April every year for me. I get one more year of the lower rate.
