Update 3/14: acdawg reports that a CSR confirmed that membership gifts do not expire, even though they can only be sent up to one year in advance. This potentially means you could buy multiple gift memberships and just redeem them one at a time every time your membership expires. See his original post here and please rep him for this information. An additional source would be nice to confirm this before people proceed to buy several "gifts".
ttp86 was also able to verify that via chat. A CSR specifically verified that you can buy five gift memberships for yourself and redeem them over 5 years. His full transcript can be found here. please rep him if you find it useful.

Didn't see this posted and while this isn't a hot deal I thought many people here would be interested as many of us rely on Amazon Prime for many Amazon deals.

Might be a good idea to renew your membership before 4/17 to take advantage of the current rates.

Additional details with the 4/17 date:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/cus...=200966690

If your membership expires after 4/17 and you want another year at the current price, buy a gift membership and set it to send the day after your current one expires. More details here
Please rep orick for this tip!

Edit: an interesting article on the reasons behind this [cnn.com]. I find the profit margin graph amazing. I knew Amazon wasn't making a lot of money, I didn't know they practically just break even!

Edit: Time Magazine mentioned this thread! [time.com] Thanks AlwayzJ for the reference.

Prime 30-day free trial: http://www.amazon.com/gp/video/pr...ckdeals-20

IF YOU ALREADY HAVE PRIME, CHECK YOUR EMAIL. You may not have to renew by 4/17 to get the new rate. People have received emails that their 2014 renewal, regardless of date, will be the same. So if your renewal comes December, 2014, you may not see the higher rate until December, 2015. Do not jump the gun and renew without checking this first.

Price Increases suck.

But you do have until 3/19 to sign up for prime at the current 79/39 rate!!!

don't forget AMEX Offer still valid.. Free Prime w/ American Express Blue Cash (1 year only)

Plus, get one year of Amazon Prime after you sign up for a new membership with your Card and meet the spending requirement in the same time period._
______________________________________________________________________
From the Amazon Website
If your membership renews before April 17, 2014, you'll be charged at a membership rate of $79. If your membership renews on or after April 17, 2014, you'll be charged at a membership rate of $99.

The annual charge for Amazon Prime includes FREE Two-Day Shipping, Prime Instant Video, and the Kindle Owner's Lending Library.

If you didn't intend to convert your membership to a full 12-month membership, you can cancel your Amazon Prime membership on the Manage Prime Membership page. If you haven't placed an Amazon Prime-eligible order, you are eligible for a full refund.

When we renew your membership, the card you gave us at sign-up is used. If we can't successfully charge this card, another payment method will be used. Your initial sign-up authorizes us to use the preferred or other available payment methods. To update your preferred card, go to Manage Prime Membership.

INSTRUCTIONS TO LOCK IN $79 RATE
Quote from orick View Post :
If your current Prime membership is scheduled to expire on or after April 17th, and therefore would auto-renew at the $99 price, you can effectively lock in the $79 price by taking the following steps:

(1) Look up your Prime expiration date. (Let's say yours is June 11th.)

(2) Purchase a Prime Gift Membership here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/prime/p...ng_landing

Set the delivery date as the date after your membership expires (in this case, June 12, 2014).

Enter your own e-mail address as the gift recipient. It is okay if this is the exact e-mail address already associated with your Amazon Prime account.

Place order (total will be $79).

(3) Turn off your Prime auto-renew. (End membership - at expiration)

(4) On the day after your membership expires, you will receive an e-mail from Amazon with the gift membership. Follow the instructions to apply it to your account.

This is a pretty straightforward way to save $20.
Answer from Amazon CSR regarding expiration of Prime gift memberships: "The membership gift will never expire as long as it isn't cancelled or redeemed. For example, if the recipient received the gift on January 1st but has a current membership through March 1st, the recipient can wait until March 2nd to redeem the gift membership."

HOW TO CANCEL AMAZON PRIME AUTO RENEW:

Quote :
Go to Manage Prime Membership [amazon.com].
Review the renewal date listed on the left-hand side of the page.

If you currently have an Amazon Prime free trial, click Do Not Continue .
If you currently have a paid Amazon Prime membership, click End Membership .

Turn off your renewal using the link below the renewal date.

Note: Your membership will expire at the end of the current period. It will NOT end before your current paid subscription is over, nor can you cancel it early for a refund.

The link you listed shows the Prime gift at $99, not the old $79.

So I got the email back in March saying my renewal this year would be $79 and then the reminder email last week saying it would be $79 on 5/17 but they charged me $99. Anyone else have this happen?

Getting rather annoyed with Amazon lately. Been using them for years with no issues and now like the last 6 months I've had about 4 or 5 issues I've had to contact customer service over. To top it off, my latest order was to be delivered today and is mysteriously now delayed.

not only that Amazon Apps are giving away a bunch of coins with apps, just earned another 1000 for a free app, even better then free app of the day. Starting to like this Kindle a lot more, may be specific to the Kindle, maybe one of those "special offers" got 2000 coins with GTA. I'm mostly in it for the free Prime shipping so all the rest is just icing on the cake.

Was looking at the refurbed Nexus 7 at cowboom but it lacks HDMI. Getting a Miracast box next week so the N7 still a viable option.

apologies in advance for resurrecting this thread...

my current membership was supposed to end on 6/4, so i purchased the membership as a gift and set it to 6/5 before the increase deadline.

however, last month, amazon missed their promised 2-day delivery on an order, so they extended the membership thru 7/4 (1 month later).

on 6/5, i received an email about the prime gift. i clicked on the "already a prime member" link (the other option is "start enjoying Prime" to see what would happen, and noticed that i can convert the $79+tax into a regular gift card.

is this because my current membership doesnt expire until 7/4, so i should click on (which link?) to re-instate another year of Prime membership?

Anyone has any idea how the new policy will impact the renewal trick? If I let my plan expire first, then renewal the plan with Gift membership, am I going to lose 4 member slots?

https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/cu...viglink-20

"Households can contain up to six members:

Two adults, each with their own Amazon account.
Up to four children, who don't need Amazon accounts in order to be a part of the household."
