Not a bad price considering these drives just recently hit the market. As far as I can tell, externals are currently the only way to get 5TB drives.

I'm pretty sure you can crack it open and use it as an Internal SATA HDD. Nobody has reviewed this particular model yet because it just came out.... but I believe the drive inside is the MG04ACA500 [toshiba.com]

I'm surprised by the low price for such a new technology. The 4TB drives have been selling for $125-150, so this is only a slightly higher cost per TB.

Still, this does carry an early adopter risk of compatibility and reliability issues. Hopefully after a year these drives will be proven, and the price per drive will have come down near to the current 4TB pricing.

I would love to try on the 5TB but my retail 3TB internal FAILED on me after 3 months.

I had no idea these were coming out. How many platters? I assume 5? I actually have a good use for one of these, a huge collection of old TV recordings (and no, not the kind you get on late night Cinemax) that total a bit over 4TB. I can wait a bit to see how these work out in real world conditions as it's all spread out over several drives now. But a welcome addition to HD options.

Wow! I'm glad Toshiba is once again providing some competition to what to often seems like a WD-Seagate duopoly.

By the way if everyone didn't know, Seagate makes a 4TB portable external drive now (2.5 inches). It's more expensive and smaller capacity obviously, but I'd kick myself if I bought this Toshiba without knowing about the Seagate.

Seagate also makes 5tb, but are only giving it to Lacie
Hopefully with Toshiba releasing their 5tbs, Seagate will also release theirs

Im not sure if we can use these internally yet. not entirely sure, but I think I read somewhere that Lacie has to use some special software/driver in their NAS for those segate drives to work well or more efficiently.

Nice, I did not know there was a 5TB desktop external that had come out.
I just bought a 4TB internal drive.
For me though, it's now either an internal or portable external.

Don't fool yourself, it is a duopoly. WD had to sell off a little 3.5" manufacturing to appease the Euros and FTC (surprisingly). Toshiba isn't nor will probably ever be a big 3.5" player.

None of these mergers should have been allowed to begin with.
