Verizon Smart Rewards bidders aren't very bright

I just wanted to express how ridiculous the bidders of the Verizon Smart Rewards are. I am on this site daily and have done quite well with the rewards. There's a few things I have noticed:

1. Most auctions are won by the last bidder before the time runs out. So why do people continue to bid hours before the scheduled end? People shouldn't start bidding till, at the earliest, the last minute. (It makes me wonder if there are Verizon/Destination Rewards bots that drive up the bids)

2. A lot of auctions are for Restaurant.com gift certificates. We all know how easily affordable these things are, so why do people waste their points on these things?

3. I just recently noticed an auction for a $25 Verizon gift card finish at 26,000 points. This is insane. Verizon occasionally offers this gift card in their daily deal for 2,500 points.

These things have bothered me for a while and I just need a place to vent about them. Have any of you also noticed these things?

I got all excited when I first heard of the rewards program. Being a Verizon customer since 1991 (I was with US West Cellular, then AirTouch Cellular before they were Verizon), I was ready for my big rewards when I heard that you got 1000 points for each year as a customer.

My first major letdown was the 6000 points I got for my "6 years" as a customer. I was hopeful that they would know I've been a customer since 1991, but only expected to get credit for the years under Verizon... which started in April of 2000, almost 14 years ago. But 6 years, really? Everybody gets 10,000 points just for joining, so 6000 for my years as a customer was a joke.

Next, I looked at the auctions and saw a few interesting items. The problem is, you can't bid the amount you would be willing to pay for the item... you can only bid incrementally, live, up until the auction ends at a set time. There's no point at all of even making a bid until there are about 2 seconds left, and then you and a thousand others are all bidding at once with the hopes that you might win. They call this an auction? It's more like a lottery than anything.

Even worse are the "Extended Play" auctions... where a bid extends the auction by 10 seconds until nobody else bids. This could go on for hours, so I've never bothered to even try winning one of these "auctions". If it was truly an auction, let people type in the amount they want to bid... and the highest bidder when the time runs out is the winner.

I've got over 20,000 points, and I've bid on about 50 auctions and haven't won a single thing. You have to be online, on the bidding page, at the exact time the auction ends .... to have about a 1 in 1000 chance of winning something. What a waste of time and energy!

It is ridiculous. Today the 25.00 Verizon Daily deal is alreay all in cart within 10 seconds after it started. I mean, do they only give out 10 cards?? I really do not like the game they lure all of the customers in. It is disappointing. I would rather get a statement discount, the kind you can redeem anytime you want.

I am losing my patience with this irrational smart rewards program. It is time to change, Verizonwireless, for a better customer loyalty program.

Totally agree with all of the above. This is a pathetic excuse of a program to reward your loyal customers. Either change the auction to an Ebay style or just post a catalog we can spend our points in.

Apparently my 30 dollar a month unlimited everything plan doesn't qualify for this, but sounds like I'm not missing anything

Just found this thread to a google search, I just want to EMPHASIZE ONE MORE TIME that this verizon smart rewards program is total BS, ESPECIALLY the auctions.

It is literally impossible to win an auction, either extended play or regular. There are literally hundreds of people clicking "bid" at the end of the auction and everyone's connection to the server is different. It literally depends on how good your connection is to the server and how lucky you are in being the LAST CLICK to win an auction.

I've spent a total of 10 hours over the last month trying to win one of the $100 gift card auctions, and I've failed EVERY time. It's literally luck of the draw depending on your connection to the server and how lucky you are to the last click. And I don't mean having the fastest level internet will help, I literally mean your PHYSICAL location and how many servers throughout the country the connection has to go through to reach the verizon bidding server. Not only that, it could depend on the time of the day, how much traffic those lines are experiencing, if any of the servers are down.

Folks, don't waste your time with this. Spend your points on the daily deals or maybe some of the merchandise if you feel it's an okay deal but like already mentioned, you want get any crazy deals off this site.

One of the biggest issues I have is that auctions never really seem to end when they say they are supposed to. For example. I see auctions set to end in 6 seconds, then the clock gets to 2, and jumps back up to 5, then down to 3 and back up to 8, all the while the auction continues to get bids higher and higher. What a farking scam, probably run by a bunch of spam bots that keep bidding on items to drive up the points you bid on. I just saw a mere $25 gift card go for 60,000+ points. Are these people insane?

Just won the points only no time extended $100 card for less then 100,000 points. I saw the auction set alarm on phone for reminder then jumped on when time and started bidding at 5 seconds and pounded mouse like mad. Fast internet helps. I am not a regular, or an auction addict. Just wanted the $ for new phone upgrade. Now I have it. Points came in handy.

Update...
12 hours later jumped on saw an auction 7 minutes left. Chilling with coffee so why not right? Won $25 gift card. I'll trade my points and 10 minutes of my life for phone $ anyday. Maybe not a perfect here is a rebate check for your loyalty deal but hey I will take the $125 Verizon money!!! Sweet!

Why so serious?

I don't think it's a scam since it's free stuff. The completely free daily deal gift cards sell out quickly, but I've still gotten 50% off gift cards from time to time. The auctions that reset the timer are horrible, and the normal auctions are entirely luck based, but it's free money. Which is also why some of the auctions go so high. I've gotten about 50,000 points so far without doing anything. Technically I should value my points at $500, but because I didn't pay for them, no biggie if I only get $200 worth of stuff for them. And most people think that way, so the points have an inflated value.

So far in auctions I've won $10 CVS, $50 in Verizon gift cards, and $200 in Restaurant.com gift cards. I view it as me getting all of them for free.

So, did Verizon let you use the $100 to upgrade your phone? I've never bid on one of the Vz gift cards, because I thought you could only use them on accessories and such.

This is crap. Posted by a Verizon troll, no one wins anything on the auctions. The "rewards" program is a scam. There's only one way allowed to use points: get fake discounts on overpriced merchandise.
Look closely at the final cost of any item you can purchase after points are applied. Is standard street prices , or the same markup as equivalent items in stores.

This makes Verizon countless millions in retail profits...money you as their customers are tricked into paying with the allure of false discounts on merchandise. It's evil, & completely legal
