From CNET [cnet.com]:

"Starting this Sunday, April 6, Best Buy will offer a minimum $100 credit when you trade in an old XP PC. And you can use that credit toward the purchase of any new Apple or Windows computer or Chromebook."

They suggest getting an Acer c720 Chromebook for $199 - $100 = $99.

YMMV: Using the image attached below and referencing bullet #3, I traded in a Chromebook cr-48 for this deal.

Important Bits:

Coupon is Unique, and has your name on it. Valid on Windows or Apple COMPUTERS or Chromebook. Based on the wording, any computer, not just laptop can be purchased with the coupon. Coupon states one coupon per upgrade, so no stacking, but you could use multiple coupons for multiple computers in the same transaction. As Always YMMV depending on the cashier/manager/string theory

This information has been verified by many SDers in this thread. So far, based on SDers experience/posts in this thread, the only thing that 100% work for ALL store require...Everything else is YMMV since "addition req. per store"

YMMV! Some stores require laptop to work on battery. Some check for XP COA Sticker. Some enter the XP Serial Number. Some require hard drives, power supplies, etc. Some don't check anything at all. THIS ALWAYS VARIES BY WHO YOU GET AND WHERE YOU ARE. Trade Ins require the power supply and accessories, but Recycles do not according to my store.

OK I stand corrected-you guys were right I was wrong!
i went back in after being turned away AT 10AM when the girl looked my old laptop up on a list.i found a manager at first he said no good, but I complained and said to call Corporate if you have to.I said the list he has is only of newer laptops with newer operating systems on them . Finally he saw in his computer that I was right, the Key words are :RECYCLE FOR TRADE IN" he told me for you guys to say
I got my $25 & $75 and used my tax ID & walked away with a Acer chrome book for $99.00 out the door.
FYI:- they never even checked if it booted up or turned on-just saw the XP sticker in it & the license key on the back- for all hey knew it could not had memory or a hard drive inside of it. -but it did
IF YOUR LAPTOP HAS A TRADE IN VALUE, YOU GET THAT AMOUNT OR $25, WHICH EVER IS MORE. IF IT IS NOT ON THE TRADE IN LIST, THEY HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE RECYCLE OPTION. IT WILL PROMPT FOR THE PROMOTION AND GIFT CARD!.

You DO NOT get a $100 GC for your laptop.

You get a $25 GC plus a limited use $75 coupon which expires on 5/3 if not used.

ONLY ONE COUPON PRINTS PER TRANSACTION. IF YOU NEED/WANT THREE COUPONS, EACH LAPTOP MUST BE PROCESSED SEPARATELY!

Desktops are NOT eligible. Offer is for WORKING LAPTOPS only.

Terms of the Deal states: $75 coupon is only good towards computers at normal price. Not good on markdown, clearance, open box, etc. Debatable on if SALE items are considered MARKDOWNS or if Markdowns refer to "manager's special", non-corporate discounts. YMMV thought some were able to get clearance ITEMS with coupon.

$75 coupon DOES NOT STACK [with same type coupon]!! (such as $75 coupon with another $75 coupon)
Coupon does stack with other coupons. E.g. generic 10% received by email.
Coupon reportedly does not have these restrictions.

Recycled a useless, worthless Samsung NC20 netbook, got a $25 GC and the $75 coupon. Asked to remove the hard drive, the CSR consulted Geek Squad who said I couldn't, until I showed her the official recycling FAQ which said I could, then she said yeah, no problem.

Bought an Acer C720 Chromebook and had it shipped to my house.

If anyone gets hassled about removing your hard drive when recycling a laptop, cite this FAQ:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Globa...4700050009

"What happens to customer data included on a recycled product?"

"Best Buy accepts hard drives and items containing hard drives for recycling. Customers may consider removing or wiping their data at their own discretion. In the case of hard drives on laptops or desktop PCs, customers have the choice to remove their data themselves, or they can consult with a Geek Squad® Agent about services we offer to remove the hard drive before handing the PC over to be recycled. "
---But this does not state you one could physically remove a drive. But, I guess one could say that by removing the drive, then, it also removes the data???

You cannot use the coupon online.

The coupon will not apply towards purchase of a tablet or open box item.

YMMV=*Best Buy computer supervisor/middle manager approved a manual 75.00 credit on an open box laptop (a 550 Lenovo already discounted to 330 - the 100 discount meant I paid 230) - so if you are polite and friendly - and get a helpful employee they may get their friendly manager to approve it.

Pretty interested in this especially if it doesn't need to be working. I have 3 or 4 xp computers I've kept for no reason other than randomly installing linux distros on them

I am sure they will either boost the price on the cheap ones, make them part of a "bundle", or simply exclude them altogether.

And if not, the employees will snag them all first.

But don't take my word for it... call your local BestBuy and ask (that was a joke... don't call unless you want to make sure you won't get one!)

This one would be a nice deal if there is no restriction or crazy conditions

You think they'll accept my VTech Baby's Learning Laptop [images-amazon.com]?

There are some conditions to the $100 trade in.

From the article:
"That credit is the result of a minimum $25 Best Buy gift card (depending on the value of your trade-in, it could be higher) and a $75 new-PC coupon that goes with it."

can it be a build-your-own- PC with xp installed? plus i dont want them to have the hard drive. so how do they confirm it's a xp system? by the sticker? if it's a build-your-own, there's no sticker on the computer.

How would they even get past the BIOS without a hard drive?

Why not just bring them a used shoe box with "cumputer" written on the side in marker?

interesting. have been trying to dig up my old xp systems and take them old files off their HDDs for the longest time. I didn't have large enough external HDDs to transfer everything when I moved from P4 XP machine to 2.5k a few years back. And then I got lazy.

Knowing Best buy, most likely that you have to have the computer running showing xp. Even that buying any of their overpriced computer is not worth it. AND if you are thinking about the chromebook, it should probably run out soon it starts and they won't offer raincheck for it.

EDIT: What the hell do they mean minimum $100?
