I know opinions and experiences with FreedomPop are varied, but for what it's worth they have rolled out the iPhone service plans we have heard of.

You can bring your own device (Sprint iPhone 4, 4s, 5) or purchase one from them.
Update: $19.99 activation fee for BYOD iPhone - thanks fanatik

Free service includes
200 voice minutes / mo
500 texts / mo
500MB data / mo

Then if you choose, you can pay to upgrade.
Unlimited voice, text and data plans start at $5 per month.

As I understand it, you can test out the service even if you are still on contract with Sprint by downloading their iPhone app:

If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

$19.95 activation fee for BYOD - thanks fanatik

It looks like some iPhone 4S's are able to be get past their web MEID check but others are not. Unsure why that would be.
Correction: Their support said my 4S wouldn't pass the MEID check because it was currently active with Sprint. They said once I canceled with Sprint it would pass.

Only the iPhone 5 is a 4G LTE device (4 & 4S are 3G only)

Buyer beware:

The way this offer is worded is not reflected accurately in the Original Post here on SD. The offer states that you can add an iPhone 4 'along with an iPhone 5 purchase from them'. That's two separate accounts for two separate phones.

iPhone users (and more Apple users than others) prove loyal to a fault in staying with Apple, so there's a high probability they're working at breeding dogged loyalty by making this initially low-profit offering.

Hopefully the more dependable T-Mobile and AT&T MVNO's will counter with competing offers.

Wow, is that really the case. I didn't pick up on that from their blog post.
If so, not what I was expecting at all.
EDIT: looks like your interpretation of their post is not the case. fanatik's post below says he was able to proceed with his 4S, and I didn't see anywhere on the site that mentions a purchase of one of their phones being required.

I just tried to check my Sprint 4s IMEI and it wouldn't accept it.

I did install their app which let me setup an account and assigned me a phone number in the area code of my choice. I placed a test call and sent a text. Both worked well (over wifi)

I have a Freedompop account with an HTC Evo Design. I rarely use it because the battery life is so bad, but I was wondering if anyone has tried moving their older Freedompop phone account to one of the iPhone accounts? And what they were planning on doing with their old phone.

I was able to check my iPhone 4S and got to the last screen which was the payment screen. They are charging $19.99 for activating the iPhone 4S on their network but $0 in monthly fees. Sounds pretty good to me.

Please change your title so others with a 5s will not be mislead by your post. Sprint is going to be keeping a deathgrip on the 5s until September at the earliest.

They don't specify but I don't think so. FreedomPop usually works with just Sprint phones. You can test by inputting the MEID into their website and they will let you know if it's supported.

R+ works off Sprint cell towers so you're gonna get some kind of signal in most places. FP works off the Sprint Wimax network for 4G coverage and that's very patchy to say the least. FP also works with Sprint 3G network but in practice that's too slow to get reliable VOIP calls. So in general call quality is gonna be much better on R+.

The other thing is that FP may not have any available numbers in your area in which case they won't let you sign up.

FP only uses Sprint WiMax and not the LTE they have been transitioning to the past few years?

My Sprint coverage with 4G is finally not bad. Keeping it because it is so cheap. But I will look into FP for my mom since we're just using prepaid for an iPhone. Sprint iPhones have much lower resale so you can get one cheaper than the unlocked versions. Got my iphone 5 64gb for 300 and that was when the 5S was released.

the iPhone 5 that FreedomPop has for $350 uses Sprint's LTE network.
