Look up Descente. For Women: the Quebec style, and for men the Coach's coat. You'd thank me if you buy one.

Scored the Patagucci Troposphere coat earlier this week when it was initally marked down. $116 for a $299 coat? Tested it out in a downpour today and kept me dry as can be. Very happy with it. Recommended if you're looking for a solid rain jacket that can be layered for winter.

Me too. Not very educated when it comes to winterwear and the value of them. I mean, i know the brand names and what's good and what's not, but that's about it. Still wear the Land's End softshell that I bought years ago. I see these winter clearance sales come and go, but I never know what to grab for lack of familiarity, and I feel like I'm missing out on something. I wouldn't buy a TNF simply because it's such a cliche now. But Patagonia, Mountain Hardware, Arc'teryx for sure. So Descent compares in quality to these brands? And do they have good clearance sells and stuff?

A Marmot Precip is a really highly rated rain jacket that is thin enough for summer and sells at a reasonable price (you can find them on sale for around $65), although it's not part of this deal. Also it's got a lifetime warranty.

Sierra Designs Hurricane Rain Jacket, just what I needed for multi-pitch this summer. And at $31 I won't mind if it gets trashed on an ascent. Nice!

Just picked up a Precip to replace an old one (waterproofing's gone, zipper's busted) from STP for $50. Used a 30% off coupon and the app which gives free shipping for items over $100.

The bottom line in rain gear from my experience is that if you use it with any frequency, it will lose its waterproofing ability eventually. Honestly the best waterproofing material is a plastic trash bag, although it doesn't breathe at all. If you want something to keep you comfortable and dry around town or for a couple nights' backpacking trip, I'd recommend the Precip. You can get Gore-Tex or eVent or whatever else fancy materials they have, but I've tried many of them and none of them really stands out. Personally I can't justify spending more than about 50-100 bucks on a solid rain jacket. The Precip (now) has pit-zips, double pockets, rollable hood, closable wrist velcro, covered zipper, taped seams, and waist-cinch cord. I really don't know what else you'd want.

I'd also recommend the Marmot Precip. Purchased about 6 months ago and very satisfied for the price.

There's also a pretty solid deal on a lightweight backpacking tent by Sierra designs (~3lb) for $120. Had me sold. Would recommend Sierra designs basic rain gear any model - I've had them for years and they'll fix most things for free! Great customer care

I just checked STP and they don't have size small...
