ShowBox, is it illegal?

Waxed 2,626 92 May 10, 2014 at 07:42 PM
Is there anyway the movie industry can find out that I'm using the ShowBox app? I know with bittorrent it's easy to find your IP address because you are sharing but in the case of ShowBox, is it also sharing?

Your IP is logged every time you download/stream/connect to anything. So the answer is technically yes, they can find out you're using the ShowBox app. Whether they have jurisdiction to request IPs from whoever is hosting the data streamed by ShowBox and whether it's worth anyones while is up for debate.

The only reason torrents work so well to snare people is because the studios could set up a honeypot and host an infringing file. You would then download a chunk of that file from them and they would record your IP with a time and date stamp.

As vivahate stated, it depends on a number of factors. Is the site in question being raided or being required to hand over data records? Does the site actually keep logs of downloads and IPs? If I had to guess I would say no to the second question, which essentially means that even if they are shutdown there's very little chance any info pertaining to your IP will be revealed.

If you are this paranoid maybe you should subscribe to an anonymous VPN service.

If it was at a fair price I would. I have both Netflix and Amazon Prime but refuse to use Hulu because they have commercials even with the payment plan.

The price is irrelevant. That's like saying I wont steal the shirt from Macys if the price was fair.

I think this is the major issue with this stuff, basic principals of supply and demand. Game of Thrones is a perfect example, there's a reason it's the most pirated show out there. HBO has limited supply by only offering it through HBOgo (which requires a cable sub) and direct cable subscription models.

Furthermore I question the pricing model, $2/episode when it is available is extreme to me. Even if you watch say 5 shows a week, that amounts to $10/week or $40/month and that doesn't get you any back catalogues. I'd much rather see a spotify type service that charges $10-$20/month for everything.

So true. I can't get Games of Thrones without paying 75$ monthly. Ridiculous.

Yeah you can. It is called waiting for the dvd release if you are too cheap to pay for it now.

Maybe I should come steal your car because if you just offered it to me for $2 I would have happily paid for it, but since you think it is worth more than that I have the right to steal it.

I hope you get caught, and sued, and pay 1000x what you would have paid doing it right.

With copyright infringement, the owner of the product still has his car. I'd happily sell my car to you for 2$ if you could replicate it.

It's obvious you don't give a shit and enjoy stealing because you have somehow justified it in your mind.

Maybe if you got off your ass and worked more you could afford to pay for the TV shows you want (not need) to see. Instead you are no different than a lifter at best buy stealing items in a foil lined bag.

Money or being able to pay for a product isn't the issue. It's giving my money to companies that like to price gouge. Seems like you are taking this personal. Why does this upset you so much? And yes, I don't see copyright infringement and stealing as one in the same. You can actually go to jail for stealing from Best Buy.

Maybe one day you will do something with your life where you make something everyone wants and I'll sit there stealing it with no regrets with everyone else and you go out of business because no one paid for it and only stole it.
