Xfinity/Comcast Gateway/Router Alternative Suggestions?

animaletamer 2,081 742 June 5, 2014 at 08:27 AM
Hi,

I did some online search and found some general options, but I thought I'd ask on SD too since many of you often have brilliant ideas and experiences.

I recently moved into my friend's house and discovered that he was using Comcast's xfinity gateway, which I believe they charge as a rental unit per month. Obviously, this is a big waste, so I want to buy either an alternative gateway or a combination of modem + router for him. I'd love to hear any recommendations on this. I'd want something that can establish a pretty good WiFi range as he wants to cover his whole house.

Please share your wisdom with me Smilie

Tony

Router + modem.

Modem is standard, find a compatible Motorola on sale, they regularly come up as deals here.

Wifi routers are covered weekly in tech support, do a search and you'll find the same choices almost every time.

if you're technically inclined, I'd get a router that supports gargoyle (similar to dd-wrt) because it does some nice bandwidth analysis per MAC. If you're close to the Comcast cap limits you can easily see what device(s) needs to be reined in.

Of course, things move quickly and there's a chance gargoyle is horribly outdated now but I've been using it a while with no issues and like it a lot (for the specific reason I mentioned above)

Grab a Motorola Modem and a Asus RT-N65U. Under $120, runs extremely stable.

bingo. That's what I have - SB6141 and RT-N56U. Although I upgrade my router every few years I am SO glad I go away from comcrap's modem that they were charging me $8/mo for.

Newegg usually had a router/modem for a very good price. Just set an alert.

If you guys are using Xfinity VOIP/Dig. Voice, then you have to rent the combo modem/router that they offer.... at least that's how it is in our market/FL. I wanted to get my own & avoid the $8 monthly rental, but had to keep it. There's is the only one that works with home alarm communication, unless you convert to 100% cell. Can't convert due to poor coverage....
Good luck

Oh. That's a good point. I didn't think about that. I'd have to ask my friend.

EDIT: He said he did get his home phone bundled together, so I'm guessing he's stuck with their gateway. Damn.
