Thread Details

B&H has an instant $100 savings off the normal $999 price for the DJI Phantom 2 Vision quadcopter.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pro...ision.html

Unfortunately for me, B&H charges tax here in NY, but even with tax, that is about $20 cheaper than anyone else currently selling it.

This was brought to my attention in a newsletter that was geared towards Father's Day so expect the price to go back the normal $999 after this week.

Good price on a good quadcopter.

I just got the Phantom 2 with H3-3D gimbal last month, since I already had the GoPro. But this is about as cheap as it gets for decent quality video in the air.

While you've got to pay to play, these things are a blast to fly around. Granted, you'll only get about 20 minutes of flight time per charge, and additional batteries are running $150 a pop right now. But the battery does at least charge fast. And there's nothing like buzzing a wheat field and spooking some cows at 35 mph.

That was with the H3-2D gimbal. They phased that model out in favor of the H3-3D bundle which they sell for $959. The big difference being the 2-axis vs. 3-axis gimbals.

FWIW, this many people claim the video quality competitive with the GoPro, and this Vision does use a 3-axis gimbal. If you don't already own a GoPro or don't need GoPro quality video, this is a pretty great deal. As it stands, my GoPro stays on my quadcopter full-time because it's a pain taking it off and putting it back on all the time. (It's a good excuse to buy a Hero 4 when they come out.)

I am new to these quadcopters but really want one. Is it possible or worth it to remove the camera on here and add a GoPro instead?

I don't have one yet and haven't tried it yet, but I would say that if you plan to use a GoPro, then wait for this version to go on sale: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pro..._with.html

I had a AR Drone 2.0 for a few weeks and as a photographer, the lack of control made me sell it off (there were mods to carry Hero3). I've been eyeing the DJI Phantom and I've seen the original go on sale for about $400 (less?) so is this really worth x2 the original? I realize with video, a gimbal is critical for "no-wabble" footage, but I've seen ppl modify for a few bucks. I used to have a Hero3 as well, but short battery and okay quality made me sell it too.

Does this Phantom 2 Vision have more payload? I'm looking for something that can carry 350-400 grams (350g will let me mount a sony nex-3n+battery+pancake lens) . Looks like original Phantom payload is about 200g.

The battery on the Phantom actually powers the GoPro, too. At least it does through mine attached to the gimbal.

If you plan on sending an NEX up in the air on one of these, which has been done, don't be this guy:

Sooo do you have SUCCESSFUL videos or how-to on DJI Phantom carrying a NEX? The video shows even 290g (281 g with battery and memory card for RX100 ii) is too heavy so advertised payload of 200g must be fairly accurate.

That's more or less what I was trying to say - it's a bad idea. You'd probably want to step up to a big copter.

Maybe something like this:

Thanks, I'll have to read more on this, but of course, the appeal of DJI phantom is the size/portability as well. At least what you suggested isn't the S800 Smilie

I was hoping that more of the different models would have gone on sale somewhere... Heck, what father wouldn't want this for Father's Day?
I would prefer to get one with the Zenmuse 3D gimbal, for the stability and the ability to use a GoPro.
I haven't seen any other sales though and am considering just biting the bullet on this one before the price goes back to normal.

Any one with any thoughts or advice?
