Although all diagnostics programs (including HP system info utility, which you can enter pressing ESC then F2 after switching the NB on) say that there are 2 slots and the 2nd one is empty, there is only one - on the bottom side of the MB - that's it! So to upgrade/add memory you will have to remove the old module and insert the new one into that only slot.
As a matter of fact, doing that is very difficult, and if you don't not feel confident about successful disassembling/assembling the notebook, you better not try.
On the other hand, replacing 4GB by 8GB is highly recommended for 3 reasons:
1) 3.5 GB (4GB - 512 MB for video) of system memory might be not enough for extensive use;
2) changing 4GB to 8GB results in dedicating 1024MB to video (GPU) instead of 512MB - better for graphics applications;
3) Factory RAM has bad timings (CL11) and works at 11-11-12-28-39. If you get, e.g. Crucial BLS8G3N169ES4 (I have installed that), which works here at 9-9-10-24-39, you will improve not only memory amount, but also 3D performance up to several % since GPU here uses this memory. The CPU performance will also be better with the faster memory.
And, besides that, there is a detailed instruction (in .pdf files) how to disassemble this notebook on the HP website in the section "User guide" (LOL): http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/w...t=7241936& .
So the risk is justified. Just be ready for real hard work and to spend several hours for that.
After having installed 8GB 1600MHz CL9 RAM and with the latest Catalist driver 14.7 RC1 and BIOS F16, HP 15-g012dx shows the following test results:
