Best Hardware to run XBMC on ?

tarazan 595 164 June 13, 2014 at 02:54 PM
I was wondering what is the best hardware to install xbmc on ? as far as speed , responsiveness , easy to operate ... etc

I heard Amazon Fire TV can be "jailbroken" to have XBMC run on it . and there are some android boxes , as well as apple tv 2 ( which is hard to find and expensive ) and apple tv 1 .

I am also wondering if a better processor can bring better experience with xbmc . I have apple tv 1 and I am curious to know if xbmc will run better if it was installed on apple tv 2 for example or amazon fire TV .

non-arm based processing will generally give you better performance (as in able to run heavier skins/etc.)

Raspberry Pi is way too slow IMO. This is the response to that, http://cubox-i.com/. It's pretty new so support isn't what it should be right now.

There are a LOT of android devices that people use with XBMC. I don't have too much experience with those though. New one that's coming out, http://global.pivosgroup.com/.

x86 in this day and age is pretty much out of the question just due to the power usage and cost.

Processor is less of a concern than hardware acceleration in XBMC, which some of these devices might lack.

I do it and replaced both my googletv and my roku with it. I have a crash here or there but not to bad.

If you are looking at ARM or Android the fire tv is the way to go, its new and has a large community on xda behind it and newer hardware.

But before you go buying one you need to look on what you plan on using it for? In the end you are on an android device and some programs/things won't work. For me I had to use another machine to generate TV listings for my hdhomerun and have the fire tv download them since the software can't be run on ARM.

Another vote for the Fire TV. It's the best sub-$100 box for XBMC right now as long as you're fine with sending your media over a network share since you can't plug a hard drive directly into it.

there is a script / set of tools on xda use that. you can also use the adb with it to push other android apps to it.

all you need to do is allow 3rd party sources.
adb connect <IP>
ASB install <apk file name>

Similar situation...I just got the FireTV/HDX bundle. Works GREAT.
Now need to add the XBMC back into the mix as my chromebook that was running unbutu (will I ever spell that right?) died and I've got about 5 TB of iso's that are "trapped" on 2 externals that I can't view without hooking up the laptop to the TV...want to get that Fire running XBMC now.

Can you expand on that?

Edit:
Used that newfangled "google web page thing" and found the following...

Yeah I know, I just want to know how it runs, any possible issues. I'm tempted to jump to replace my raspberry pi.

EDIT: Only downside I see if that I'd have to pay for the Plex app again.

UGH, used 56 bucks in credit and ordered a Fire TV. I'll report back on how plex works. Got plans for the pi though, so I needed something.
