I read that the unit records at 1080p using 8 cameras, using 9-16 camers will only allow you to record at 720p. Someone who has this DVR please advise.

How about just reading skills:
Real-time recording (30fps per channel) at 1080p (up to 8 channels) and 720p (up to 16 channels).

$155/camera isn't that great at all. Domes may be completely useless depending on situation.

Correct.. Real time recording is 1080p for the first 8 cameras and then 720p for 9-16. The HD IP technology and Power over Ethernet (PoE) single cable installation is a definite plus, 150' night vision is great also. The other cool thing is that, for cameras 9-16, they include a separate PoE switch which allows you to spread out your cameras a little more and not limited to the 100' distance on all cameras.

8 cameras for 1080p, and the rest of 8 for 720p are all at 30fps? How about playback?
