Haven't owned an HP since the dv6000 days. I loved the dv6000 for being a solid workhorse with an excellent trackpad (multitouch!) and keyboard.

Are these new ones comparable? Do they still spin up the fans at the hint of demanding tasks?

Not comparable at all. The Envy is an atrocious model...inside and out.

Thanks for the heads up. It looks pretty shiny, but I get the feeling that it's a trap.

Just saying. Not trying to rock the boat. Price seems pretty good considering. I personally HATE island style keys or whatever they're called. Prefer a "regular" keyboard.

That's not the one that OP mentioned. You have linked to a touchsmart model. OP's model is not a touchsmart one.

Specs for the price are absolutely great. I am with you on the island style thing. The rMBP gave me serious symptoms of Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, despite being a nice clicky keyboard. I guess it was a case of me holding it wrong (seriously, I guess I just use island/chiclet keyboards wrong).

Close enough, no?
I mean, if they gave it awful reviews it would surely deter me from moving forward.
Adding/subtracting a touch screen can't make THAT much of a difference from a lifespan, quality or performance point of view, can it?

The specs are really good for that price.
For a NEW laptop?
With a new i7 quad CPU?
1080p screen?
Dedicated video card?
Sounds like it has everything MOST people would want.
If there is a better deal for a new laptop with specs like this I wouldn't mind taking a gander.

There is no change in the build quality. Touchscreen would be a personal preference. Windows 7 vs Windows 8 on a touchscreen is also another fact.

Use the American Express $75 off $350 will bring it down to $509.99 + tax. This makes it even better deal.
