idk what advice I should give because I'm an immigrant and was one of those "rich kids", I used to live in one of the more expensive spot in Saigon, which is probably the most densely packed place in Vietnam, I'm not spoiled or anything because I didn't know we were rich until I moved to America, and by then we were definitely poor compared to folks over here haha. But yeah if I did go back a few times, I think all of my immunities that I gained from living there stayed with me because I never had food poisoning or anything like that, and I pretty much ate everything and everywhere, sanitary or not. Ironically, I had food poisoning here in America, and at Panda express no less, which should be relatively clean because it's a chain restaurant. Also for some reason I get allergies here in the state, but don't, back in Vietnam, even though there is definitely wayyyy more smog and smoke there.
One of the commenters asked that are you really experiencing Vietnam if you go to big cities, I would say yes, definitely, I was born in a big city, I did big city things, and now that i'm in America, and I live in san Francisco, it's definitely not the same, there are things there that you probably had to grow up with to appreciate, but to say that if you stay in big cities you won't be experiencing Vietnam, that's false, because in some regards, to me the parts where I had the most experience of what Vietnam is about are the big cities, not the rural areas.
But yeah, do bring hand sanitizer just to wash your hands and stuff, if you don't speak Vietnamese at all you need to bring your own medicine, and if you don't speak Vietnamese you're probably not used to the food so definitely bring medicine for your stomach lol.
What's the best mode of transportation in Vietnam?
I hear a lot of packers buy motorcycles/mopeds when they get there from others that are leaving. Would it be safe and comfortable if planning to go from hanoi to Saigon and stopping at towns along the coast?
